COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Direct care workers are honored today at the Hannah Community Center with the Caregiver’s Butterfly Garden, a traveling exhibit featuring thousands of handcrafted paper butterflies that celebrate care and connection. Created by artist Zahrah Resh, the project will soon travel to other communities.  FOX 47

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Three Lansing GameStops at Delta Plaza, Eastwood Towne Center and Marketplace at Delta are set to close in January — customers with preorders or trade credit should call ahead to confirm where services will shift.  WJIM AM
  • Airport Tavern closed from Jan. 1-9 during its transition to new owner Marcus Powers after former owner Pete Sinadinos retired; the official reopening is delayed due to uncontrollable circumstances—this historic 55-year venue awaits further announcements.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rock the Country festival will take place in Hastings on Aug. 8 and 9; Kid Rock will headline on Aug. 8 and Jason Aldean on Aug. 9 as part of a nationwide tour celebrating America’s 250th birthday (the venue is about 45 minutes from downtown Lansing).  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU professor Pete Johnston ended his Jeopardy! run last night in the Champions Wildcard Tournament after he answered the Final Jeopardy question about Biblical art incorrectly — his December win in the Second Chance Tournament boosted his comeback and spurred a lively watch party at Pizza House in Alma.  WKAR
  • Michigan schools may soon offer optional teen firearm safety classes that teach accident prevention (and safe hunting practices) after Governor Whitmer signed a new law. The courses can meet hunting license requirements and aim to reduce accidental injuries among students.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A bright meteor lit up the skies above Lansing on Saturday, Jan. 10, with over 30 sightings reported from Michigan and neighboring states, while local researchers triangulated its breakup zone near the city and experts invited residents to verify potential meteorites.  WKAR
  • Michigan is expecting a wintry mix today with drifting snow and freezing rain across the state. In Lansing, residents will see drizzle or freezing rain in the morning with highs around 41 and additional rain and snow later as colder temperatures persist.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delta Township’s expanded bus service ended Monday, Jan. 12 after voters rejected a public transportation millage, ending a three-year partnership that provided thousands of rides near Lansing Mall. Riders can contact CATA for alternative schedules — transfers to other routes are available.  WKAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frozen Ore-Ida and Sysco tater tot cases are being recalled after hard plastic fragments were found that could cause choking. Shoppers should return or discard the bulk foodservice products, as no injuries have been reported (FDA announced a Class II recall).  WJIM AM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State and Indiana are set to play at 7 p.m. today at the Breslin Center (MSU leads the Big Ten in defense) as both teams look to impress local fans with their fresh tactics and competitive spirit.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing voters can cast their votes for the LSJ girls high school athlete of the week until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 14. The contest features Africa Beltran of Bath basketball, Avery Hannah from Haslett, and Kylee Malloy of Olivet wrestling.  Lansing State Journal
  • Voting for LSJ boys high school athlete of the week is open until noon tomorrow; candidates include Portland St. Patrick’s Charlie Thelen, who posted 17 points + 4 steals, East Lansing's KJ Torbert, who scored 39 points in a Division 1 win, and Portland wrestler Gunnar Williams.  Lansing State Journal
