  • Families in Lansing can enjoy free and low-cost sledding at spots such as Granger Meadows and Hawk Island (which requires pre-purchased tickets) along with more options at local schools and parks, plus safe hills for all ages this winter.   • Home repair firm MyHandyMa’am, with nearly all women employees, is opening new pathways into trades by sharing skills and soon launching a podcast + apprenticeship program. The company targets single women who prefer reliable, all-female service.  Lansing City Pulse

CULTURE NEWS

  • WKAR classical music host Jody Knol celebrated 40 years on air yesterday with a special broadcast featuring music from his first day at the station. The longtime host—now with roughly 9,000 shows to his credit—plans to continue working as long as he remains healthy.  WKAR
  • Queer Heart of Michigan is holding open auditions this Sunday for its new inclusive choir that welcomes queer adults of all vocal ranges plus pianists. Rehearsals start Monday at 7 p.m. as the group prepares to celebrate diverse voices with Disney and animated tunes.  Lansing City Pulse

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development may prohibit or restrict six invasive plant species, including the Callery pear and Japanese barberry, to control environmental risks as public feedback is accepted until Feb. 9 and final decisions are set for spring.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can share input on Deep Green’s proposed 24-megawatt data center powered by the Board of Water and Light and delivering carbon-neutral heat at community events from Jan. 15 to Jan. 24 and at a public hearing on Feb. 9 (a Board presentation is set for Jan. 26).  WKAR
  • Michigan's 15 public universities produced nearly $45 billion in economic activity in fiscal year 2024 (supporting 129,000 jobs and over $15 billion in alumni earnings), and university leaders are asking lawmakers to roll a one-time 3% increase into the regular state budget.  Lansing State Journal
  • CATA’s Listening Bus is back on Thursday, Jan. 15 on select routes in Lansing so riders can share their transit experiences. CATA representatives will board buses and record feedback monthly (third Thursday sessions).  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State field hockey coach Helen Knull resigned after 15 seasons, ending her role with 108 wins & a record of academic success among her athletes. MSU will soon search for her replacement as she pursues a career outside sports.  The State News
  • Michigan State women's basketball improved its USA Today ranking to No. 14 after a strong 17-game start and eight-game win streak; the team will host Nebraska at 7 p.m. Thursday and face Iowa on Sunday.  Lansing State Journal
  • On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the English twins scored 27 points to help DeWitt secure a 50-42 win over Haslett, lifting the Panthers to an 8-1 start under coach Bill McCullen.  Lansing State Journal
