- ➤ Unhoused residents staying at the Causeway Bay Hotel have gained jobs thanks to temporary housing but fear losing support when their six-week stay (half complete) ends in three weeks; housing advocates urge the city to extend the program to keep residents off the cold streets. WKAR
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Restaurant chain Pizzawala’s will bring fusion pizzas with butter chicken and mango paneer toppings to East Lansing. Its soft opening is planned for mid-February and will begin with limited hours before expanding to include a dining area (serving alcohol). WJIM AM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Michigan named new president Kent Syverud (69) on Jan. 12; he will earn a $2 million base salary under a five-year contract, nearly twice MSU’s president’s pay as other college heads earn between $500k and $525k. Lansing State Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Michigan law allows feeding most wildlife but bans feeding deer and elk, with Lansing enforcing a deer feeding ban. The state DNR advises residents to remove food sources & secure trash to prevent attracting nuisance animals and protect property. Lansing State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan House passed a bill banning smartphones in public K-12 classrooms with exemptions for medical needs, lessons, and basic phones (the measure now heads to the state Senate) for the upcoming school year. Michigan Public Radio
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Jeremy Fears scored a career high 23 points and 10 assists as Michigan State defeated Indiana 81 to 60 Tuesday night in East Lansing. His strong play raised his double double tally and boosted the team's defense after his injury season. The State News
- ➤ Local teams played in Wednesday's games as Holt defeated Mason 71-56, Pewamo-Westphalia beat Potterville 84-43, Laingsburg edged Saranac 47-24, Portland St. Patrick won against Lansing Christian 70-46, Leslie overcame Addison 72-40, and Webberville routed Ashley 69-8. Lansing State Journal
