COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Lansing Inc. received funding to boost its signature Big Red Ball Gala (a black-tie event) and support local businesses, with the funds set to enhance downtown appeal and help find new Middle Village businesses this spring.  FOX 47
  • Lansing’s Code Blue plan has been extended as warming centers work to keep people safe from dangerously cold, single-digit temperatures. Local churches, including Union Missionary Baptist, are supporting overnight shelter services at the Letts Community Center & a nearby facility until the end of January.  FOX 47

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Verizon suffered a network outage on Jan. 14 that led to call failures and an SOS icon replacing signal indicators in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Engineers are working quickly to resolve the issue, and customers are questioning if they will receive a credit.  Lansing State Journal
  • Deep Green eased downtown concerns over its data center proposal during a virtual event on Jan. 16, saying its water system minimizes use and disposes chemicals offsite. It plans union labor and local-first hiring and will host an open house at the Lansing Center on Jan. 24.  WKAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA predicted a strong northern lights display for Friday night across Michigan, but cloudy skies and snow likely limited the view in Lansing, South Haven + Harbor Beach.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The TSA will offer ConfirmID starting Feb. 1 for Michigan travelers without acceptable Real ID; they will verify their IDs for $45 at airport checkpoints and the process takes 10-30 minutes (passports and enhanced licenses also meet requirements).  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State will face Washington at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday in Seattle, and will travel to Eugene to play Oregon on Tuesday. Coach Tom Izzo expressed confidence — his team will boost its offense after last season’s West Coast setbacks.  The State News
  • The No. 4 hockey team (Spartans) defeated No. 2 Wisconsin 4-1 Friday night with three quick first-period goals; junior goaltender Trey Augustine made 30 saves as they swept the series for six Big Ten points.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing fighter Mando Gutierrez balances his MMA career with working as a barber — a trade that keeps him grounded as he pursues major opportunities. He has competed in LFA, Contender Series, The Ultimate Fighter and PFL, reflecting his focus on resilience and growth.  WKAR
