BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sheetz proposes to open its first mid-Michigan location on East Saginaw Street near offices (and residences) in East Lansing. The new store will cover over 6,000 sqft, include a drive-thru and EV charging, with a City Council vote set for Feb. 3 and a projected opening in 2027.  WKAR
  • Value City Furniture is holding going-out-of-business sales in nine Michigan locations as part of its liquidation following bankruptcy filings. Sales are open now in Canton, Flint, Kentwood, Saginaw, Sterling Heights, Taylor, Traverse City, Utica, & Westland.  Lansing State Journal
  • Great Lakes Coca‐Cola Distribution (3300 South Creyts Road) issued a WARN notice stating it will lay off 62 employees and reassign 99 others by April 3 (80 days from the notice), and it did not detail plans for the Lansing-area location.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU College of Music is launching a week of live performances today with an American music celebration at Cook Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Upcoming events include Saturday’s opera gala at Fairchild and Monday’s Mozart birthday concert with chamber music and birthday cookies.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dangerously cold wind chills are expected today as temperatures fall below zero, so local school districts will decide on class closures if winds hit minus 20 (the usual threshold for canceling classes). Parents across Mid-Michigan, including in Lansing, await announcements by about 5:30 a.m.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trey Fort hit four important shots in Michigan State's 68-52 victory over Oregon on Tuesday. Coach Tom Izzo gave him more minutes after a slow start, boosting his role when the team needed him most.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU hockey coach Adam Nightingale said players will wear DS patches during today's home series against Minnesota to honor late operations director Dan Sturges, who died unexpectedly Jan. 19 at age 40 + his memory will inspire the team to play hard.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State women's basketball hosted USC at Breslin Center on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET—the No. 15 Spartans, coming off a loss that ended a nine-game win streak, aimed to remain unbeaten at home while USC, missing star Watkins, relied on top freshman Jazzy Davidson.  Lansing State Journal
