Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 24th of January.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Violinist Ray Chen will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic — his third mid-Michigan show in less than two years — at Cobb Great Hall in the Wharton Center on Monday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m.  Lansing State Journal
  • Peppermint Creek Theatre Company presents Fatherland, a play that shows a father and son’s conflict using actual court transcripts. The production runs from Jan. 23 until Feb. 1 at Stage One Performance Center on Lake Lansing Road.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • While local school districts closed for dangerous cold weather, MSU kept classes and campus operations running over the weekend. MSU Police Chief Mike Yankowski said (factors included snowfall, wind chills, and emergency alerts) that instructors could opt for online sessions if they felt unsafe.  WKAR
  • The Michigan Senate approved a bill today that will ban cell phones in K-12 public school classrooms, following the House vote earlier this week. The House must approve emergency exemptions before Governor Whitmer can sign the bill into law.  Stacks 92.1

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • If you hear a sudden boom, it may be a frost quake (cracks in frozen, water-soaked soil from very cold weather). Michigan remains below zero until Jan. 25, so residents could experience this natural sound.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will vote on Feb. 3 on a special use request to allow the first Sheetz in East Lansing. The 6,139-sqft site at 111 E. Saginaw St is expected to create 30 to 35 full-time jobs and open in 2027 if approved — the council will add noise and runoff conditions.  Lansing State Journal
  • Residents and advocates urge officials to open City Hall’s lobby as an extra warming center as below-freezing temperatures drive up demand; Mayor Schor said the city is expanding options by keeping Letts Community Center and other sites open — a plan to ensure adequate shelter during cold weather.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amid severe cold that began Jan. 22, Michigan residents are urged to use space heaters safely to avoid fire and carbon monoxide risks. Experts recommend using a built-in timer to limit heater use to between 6 and 8 hours daily (and to plug heaters directly into wall outlets).  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan state police warn residents that extreme cold with wind chills near -30 can lead to frostbite in minutes, urging people to dress warmly. The National Weather Service forecasts single-digit highs on Saturday, so residents are advised to check MI Ready for safety tips.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • MSU hockey won 3-1 over Minnesota on Friday night in a game that honored late director Dan Sturges, with Maxim Štrbák scoring a tribute goal. The Spartans will complete the series today at 6:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.  The State News
  • Scott Moore, radio voice of MSU Athletics for 33 years, has celebrated many championship moments including a memorable national hockey win in 2007 and the touching support of his daughter. He remains a dedicated broadcaster who overcomes challenges to bring game excitement to listeners.  WKAR
  • The Spartans host Maryland at noon today at Breslin Center as they ride a five-win streak and use a high assist rate against a team battling injuries. The Terrapins aim for an upset in this key Big Ten contest (a notable matchup for local fans).  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU women’s basketball fought back today to win 74-68 over USC at Breslin Center — Kennedy Blair’s clutch play and senior Grace VanSlooten’s late steal sealed the victory.  The State News
