Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 25th of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Extreme cold has led experts to warn drivers against using hot water or vinegar on icy windshields since rapid temperature changes may crack the glass and lead to costly repairs; they advise using de-icing solutions and defrosting the car instead.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Olive Burger Week is underway from Jan. 23 to Jan. 31 in Lansing, when over two dozen restaurants serve both classic and inventive versions of the city’s signature dish (from traditional green to creative twists) for burger lovers.  WJIM AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A proposed $120M data center by Deep Green is sparking debate among downtown residents who question its need despite company promises of free heat, no utility rate increases, and minimal water use (company plan to transform a parking lot). A public hearing on the project is scheduled for February.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s house centipedes often scurry across bathrooms at night (they aren’t dangerous as they help control tiny pests) so homeowners are advised to run the fan and fix leaks to reduce moisture.  WJIM AM
  • Michigan residents are spotting tiny black springtails—commonly called snow fleas—as the snow softens and temperatures rise, signaling that warmer days and spring are near. The insects produce a natural antifreeze and feed on decaying matter, marking nature's gentle shift.  WJIM AM

FINANCE NEWS

  • No one won Mega Millions on Friday, Jan. 23, so the jackpot grew to at least $285 million. The next drawing is set for Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 11 p.m., with Michigan ticket sales closing at 10:45 p.m.  Lansing State Journal

  • Reports show that in 2025, Michigan's student safety program OK2Say received over 10,000 tips with more than 3,500 reporting mental health issues, overtaking bullying as the top concern.
