COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local businesses including Sunnyside Café, which offers free meals from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., help children when school is canceled due to weather. Community organizations run meal sites across town to support over 24,000 food insecure kids.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residential College of Arts and Humanities introduced Bogue Street Records last December when Austin Oting Har and a team of faculty and students launched a record label that promotes Lansing's local music scene & supports interdisciplinary projects; upcoming releases are planned throughout the spring.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at Alfreda Schmidt Community Center (5825 Wise Road) to decide among six identified sites for the NOVA initiative’s 50 modular housing pods and resource center. The project has been delayed, with pod availability now expected by at least September.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing’s snow removal ordinance requires residents to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after snow, or the city will remove it at a cost of $150 or more — keeping walkways safe for all. Residents with questions should contact the Lansing Public Service Department.  Stacks 92.1
  • Amid severe winter conditions, local public works departments are conserving road salt due to delivery delays caused by high demand+ Lansing still has enough salt for the next couple weeks and expects an update later this week.  Lansing State Journal
  • About 75 students and community members gathered Saturday morning at Lansing Center to voice concerns over a proposed $120 million data center that would exchange power for carbon neutral heat. City Council will vote next month and hold public comments Monday, as critics labeled the event a PR campaign.  The State News
  • IRS began processing 2025 income tax returns on Jan. 26; Michigan residents must file by Apr. 15 or request an extension (using Form 4868) to avoid penalties, and mailed returns need a hand stamp before the deadline.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • MSU basketball, with an 18-2 record + ranked 3-seed by bracketology, is set to face Rutgers today at 6:30 p.m. in a Big Ten game that will close the first half of the season and move them closer to coach Tom Izzo's 28th NCAA Tournament bid.  Lansing State Journal
  • Dan Sturges, the long-time MSU hockey director of operations, died unexpectedly last Monday and was celebrated for his passion and team unity (he was widely known as the glue holding the staff together). A memorial service is planned Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Munn Ice Arena.  Lansing State Journal
  • Voting is open until noon Wednesday, Jan. 28 for the LSJ girls high school athlete of the week contest, which features nominees like Maya Barker of Holt, Selina Stalker of Ionia, and Cecilia Williams of Mason, recognized for key wins in recent games.  Lansing State Journal
  • Voting for the LSJ boys high school athlete of the week is now open for performances from Jan. 19-24, with candidates Mason Dowdy, Hunter Kinkema, and Vincent Rose competing to be featured in LSJ (voting closes at noon tomorrow).  Lansing State Journal
