BUSINESS NEWS

  • Apple Vacations launches a nonstop flight from Capital Region International Airport to Los Cabos today, with flights running through March 27. Weekly departures to Punta Cana and Cancun/Riviera Maya are also scheduled — expanding travel options from Lansing.  Stacks 92.1
  • United Airlines is returning to Capital Region International Airport with four daily nonstop flights to Chicago O’Hare starting May 7, with tickets on sale Jan. 29. This improved service will give local travelers a direct connection that supports business travel in Lansing.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hadestown, the Tony award winning musical, will perform at Wharton's Cobb Great Hall from today through Feb. 1 as actor Rudy Foster stars as Hermes in a live retelling of Greek legend with a mix of jazz, blues and folk music.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, Jan. 28, 280 student groups gathered at the STEM Building for Springticipation where overcrowding raised concerns, though many clubs praised the turnout; organizers plan to adjust the layout to improve flow amid space limits (outdoor conditions prevented using outside space).  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MDARD has proposed a quarantine on untreated out-of-state firewood to stop pests from entering local forests, which means logs must be heat-treated + certified, though locally gathered firewood is exempt; residents can share views in an online survey open until 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 9.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers without a REAL ID or passport will face a TSA fee of $45 starting Sunday unless they complete the 10-15 minute online verification (ConfirmID) before reaching the security checkpoint at Capital Region International Airport and other airports. Officials advise arriving early with a mobile device to show the receipt.  FOX 47

  • Today at 8 p.m., No. 7 Michigan State faces No. 3 Michigan at Breslin Center in a Big Ten game that will be defined by strong defense and teamwork—Spartans aim to extend an eight-year unbeaten streak against their rival.  The State News
  • High school athletes can now earn money from endorsements, autographs, and modeling under new MHSAA rules effective immediately. The guidelines ban pay-for-play and using school logos for deals.  WJIM AM
