COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michigan State University has planned a memorial service for Dan Sturges at Munn Ice Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 3; doors open at 4:45 p.m. and the program starts at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available (near Munn and at Lots 63, 67, 79, and 126).  Stacks 92.1

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lansing artist Sergei Kvitko, owner of Blue Griffen Recording, is one of five nominees for Producer of the Year, Classical at the Grammy Awards, with the ceremony scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday in Los Angeles.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University held classes on Friday, Jan. 24 while a severe weather advisory warned wind chills could drop to minus 25 degrees. Instructors were given options for online teaching amid questions over the lack of a formal weather policy, unlike other local universities that canceled in-person classes.  The State News
  • Governor Whitmer has launched the State of the State Art Contest for K-12 students, who can submit artwork or written pieces about what they love about Michigan until 11:59 p.m. Feb. 15 online.  Stacks 92.1

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Attorney General and Enbridge Energy have agreed to pause state court challenges while key legal questions are argued in federal courts. The federal cases will be decided first — one is set for next month before the U.S. Supreme Court and another before the U.S. Sixth Circuit.  WKAR
  • Lansing and neighboring communities are planning new rules as data centers expand across mid-Michigan, fueled by federal policies and state tax breaks; two facilities already run by Liquid Web are in operation here, and Mason City Council will decide on an ordinance Monday evening that could set future standards.  FOX 47
  • A snow emergency has not been declared yet, but Lansing will begin plowing residential streets early next week (per ordinance No. 1267) to clear parked vehicles and help avoid fines.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • MSU hosted Michigan Friday at the Breslin Center but fell 83-71 as turnovers and a sluggish first half cost the Spartans while Michigan took sole lead in the Big Ten. Coach Izzo said early mistakes — including an 18-point first-half deficit — ultimately proved too costly for MSU.  The State News
  • MSU athletics stay busy this winter as men's basketball won an overtime game against Rutgers and women's basketball beat USC before a rivalry game with Michigan. The hockey team will play Penn State in an outdoor match today while gymnastics, wrestling and tennis continue their competitive run.  The State News
  • Twelve players with Michigan roots will shine in Super Bowl 60 on February 8 at 6:30 p.m. as the Seahawks & Patriots face off for the Lombardi Trophy, spotlighting local talent during a high-stakes game.  WJIM AM
  • Students lined up outside the Breslin Center for today's Michigan State versus Michigan men's basketball game but early arrivals were removed as security enforced a rule allowing lining up only after 6 p.m.—fans gathered by 4:30 p.m. amid cold weather and cheered with supportive chants.  The State News
