CULTURE NEWS

  • Collegiate teams participated in the 11th annual Green and White Gala on Saturday at IM Circle. Hosted by the MSU Ballroom Dance Team, competitors from several universities were judged on their dance styles and technique, featuring both slow Latin and fast-paced dances — such as swing and cha-cha.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s DNR reported the 2025 deer season ended with about 295,739 harvested deer as of Feb. 1 after the extended archery season ended Jan. 31; tag holders must now report within 72 hours + face a fine for late reports.  WJIM AM
  • The Michigan DNR wildlife division said its budget is stretched as hunting and fishing license fees have not increased since 2014 — growing costs and a 30% drop in hunters have strained its aging facilities and slowed response times.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan returned $164 million in unclaimed property last year, and residents can check if money is owed on the state’s official website. The updated database includes forgotten accounts, checks, and certificates that may belong to locals.  WJIM AM

  • Food lovers can try Yello Waffle in Okemos for its savory Brussels waffle topped with egg, bacon and hot honey + a rich marshmallow hot cocoa, served in a plaza off Marsh Road. The kid-friendly eatery offers fresh flavors for local diners.  WJIM AM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Over 28 Michigan-connected athletes will compete for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy starting Feb. 6. The roster spans ice dance, hockey and snowboarding and includes talents (Madison Chock, Nick Baumgartner) who trained or played college sports here.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State beat Michigan 197.525 — 197.425 at Crisler Center on Sunday afternoon in a Big Ten gymnastics dual after standout routines from Tucker and Ortiz swayed the close meet; the Spartans will travel to Penn State on Feb. 8.  The State News
  • The Spartans lost an overtime thriller to Michigan (94-91) at Breslin Center after a late missed half-court shot tied the game; they will host Maryland on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for their next matchup.  The State News
