- ➤ On Tuesday, Feb. 3, hundreds of family, friends, and former teammates gathered at Munn Ice Arena to honor Dan Sturges, the MSU hockey operations director and national championship team player who died on Jan. 19 at age 40 by sharing speeches and video tributes of his lasting impact on the program. - ➤ The Ingham County Animal Shelter in Mason is hosting a Valentine’s pet adoption special with cats for $25 and dogs for $50 until February 14. The shelter is open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (600 Buhl Street). Stacks 92.1

- ➤ Blue Owl Coffee Co. will close its Old Town location on Feb. 6 after more than five years in business; it opened in Sept. 2019 and will continue operating at its REO Town and East Lansing locations. Stacks 92.1

- ➤ Brett Metzger, a math teacher at Brown City, was named Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner and awarded a $2,000 check today + his work in and beyond the classroom earned statewide recognition. FOX 47
- ➤ Sean Sabo (a Pioneer High School English and acting teacher) has been named this week's Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner after a parent nomination highlighted his dedication. He received a $2,000 check in recognition of his focus on developing students' writing and critical thinking skills. FOX 47
- ➤ Amanda Lewis, a third-grade teacher at Sault Area Elementary School, is honored today with the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award for her outstanding classroom readiness and dedication to teaching kindness (and empathy). FOX 47
- ➤ Michigan State University received a $50 million donation from the Leinweber Foundation, its largest for a facility, to build a new engineering center at the southwest corner of Red Cedar Road & West Shaw Lane. Construction will begin soon and is expected to complete by December 2028. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Becca Drozd of Hopkins Public Schools was named this week's Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner and received a 2000-dollar check for her dedication to inclusive student support+ Her award recognizes her commitment to helping students thrive in the district. FOX 47
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers reported that, by Feb. 1, ice covered most of the Great Lakes with Lake Erie reaching nearly 95% and Lake Huron between 72% and 77%. An Arctic front on Feb. 3 led to further ice growth — officials noted temperatures dropped to single digits. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ Michigan taxpayers can check their 2025 refund status online via the Michigan Treasury website and IRS portal after filing; e-filed returns receive refunds within 21 days (paper filings may take up to four weeks) and must be submitted by Wednesday, April 15. Lansing State Journal
