COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents of the former Fallen Angels Encampment now reside at the Causeway Bay Hotel following a court-ordered relocation; the stability has helped some secure jobs at the hotel. Ingham County Commissioners will vote in coming weeks on funding to extend temporary housing & address concerns over long-term options.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU celebrates the 50th anniversary of Black History Month with a series of campus events this February. The schedule kicks off today at 5:30 p.m. with the Dr. William G. Anderson Lecture Series featuring Dean Jelani Cobb and continues with seminars, open houses, and more community gatherings.  The State News
  • On Feb. 4, CATA unveiled its Rosa Parks Tribute Bus in downtown Lansing featuring a timeline of her legacy and the civil rights movement (attended by local dignitaries), marking 70 years since the Montgomery Bus Boycott.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU plans a $35 million renovation of Wilson Hall (near Spartan Stadium) to convert its former dining hall into laboratories for the Technology Engineering program, pending a vote by the Board of Trustees on Friday, Feb. 6. The new labs will support hands-on learning in robotics, prototyping, and embedded systems.  Lansing State Journal
  • Brandon Bailey, a fifth grade math and science teacher at Forest View Elementary, has been awarded the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award along with a $2,000 prize. He said his love of learning drives him to offer hands-on experiences for his students.  FOX 47
  • Celia Bissett, a fifth and sixth grade math teacher from Highlands Middle School, received the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award this week; she earned a $2,000 check for her work in making math accessible for her students.  FOX 47
  • Rachel Engel (a first-grade teacher at Schoolcraft Elementary) has been named this week’s Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner and received a $2,000 check in recognition of her work creating a safe classroom environment.  FOX 47
  • IM East, the main campus recreation facility on the east side, struggles with broken lockers and outdated machines as students complain, while MSU plans to address issues by moving equipment from IM West before a new recreation center opens in spring.  The State News

HEALTH NEWS

  • McLaren Greater Lansing has named Dean Mazzoni as its new president and chief executive officer, effective immediately. Mazzoni (with 20 years of leadership) will lead efforts to boost clinical quality and patient care for the Lansing community.  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • 4-star wide receiver Samson Gash signed with Michigan State football Wednesday at Catholic Central signing day, keeping his commitment despite coaching changes. The speedy state champion remained in-state over offers from Alabama and Penn State to join the Spartans.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State now sells season tickets for baseball (24 games at McLane Stadium for $150) and softball (17 games at Secchia Stadium for $100) and enters ticket holders in the Jerseys Off Our Back raffle; softball starts Friday and baseball begins with a tournament next weekend.  Stacks 92.1
  • After its Friday loss to Michigan, the Spartans played Minnesota on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Williams Arena in Minneapolis as they tried to shake off the setback and regain momentum after a seven-game win streak ended.  Lansing State Journal
