CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist India Solomon worked with students from University Health and Wellness to create a mural at Olin Health Center that promotes mental well-being. The project is on display (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and may lead to more art collaborations across campus.  The State News
  • MSU jazz studies professors Xavier Davis and Michael Dease won their fourth Grammy Award as members of the Christian McBride Big Band for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album (Without Further Ado, Vol 1) after Sunday's ceremony.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan players who joined the lottery in 2010 have excelled in Mega Millions by ranking among the top five for jackpot wins and with only six Powerball winners recorded — Oakland County's Wolverine FLL Club claimed a $1.05 billion win in 2021.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU board addressed immigration concerns and approved renovation of Wilson Hall to create engineering labs. The meeting introduced new leadership with Trustee Brianna Scott taking the board chair position—some trustees joined late via Zoom.  The State News
  • MSU plans to launch Spartan Media Ventures on July 1 to boost its athletics programs with support from a $100 million donation. Some trustees voiced concerns at a recent board meeting about having to sign nondisclosure agreements to access project documents.  The State News
  • Jessica Benavides was named interim superintendent by the Lansing School District after Ben Shuldiner left for Seattle’s top school role; she has served as first deputy superintendent (since July) and will focus on maintaining operations while strengthening local ties.  Stacks 92.1
  • Michigan State University board approved the demolition of aging IM West on Feb. 6 as the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center will open in May+one trustee opposed the motion, saying the vote was premature without a clear replacement plan.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing residents can now file their 2025 federal and state returns, which are due by April 15, with a six-month extension available until Oct. 15 (remember to secure your mail postmark).  Lansing State Journal
  • County commissioners will decide Tuesday whether to extend shelter at Causeway Bay Hotel (housing 60 people moved in December) after the city budgeted $40K for a six week stay and may add $76K for two extra months while residents wait for IDs and vouchers.  WKAR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Minnesota developer proposes a 13-story mixed-use building at 530 Albert Ave in downtown East Lansing for MSU students. The project, which includes 236 units and modern amenities, awaits a permit review with council approval due in March and construction set to begin in September (completion by August 2028).  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Divine Ugochukwu, a transfer guard from Miami, will have foot surgery next week after injuring his left foot in a Feb. 6 loss to Minnesota, ending first season with MSU — Coach Tom Izzo said his absence means fewer guard options as the team hosts Illinois at 8 p.m. today.  Lansing State Journal
  • Former MSU stars Kenneth Walker III and Bryce Baringer will take the field in Super Bowl 60 on Sunday. Walker, a standout with the Seahawks, and Baringer, a top punter for the Patriots, carry Spartan pride from East Lansing to the NFL’s biggest stage.  The State News
  • KJ Torbert scored 39 points with eight rebounds to lead East Lansing to an 81-64 win over Waverly on Friday, Feb. 6. His strong play helped the Trojans take a two-game lead in the CAAC Blue while teammates stepped up after Kingston Thomas was sidelined.  Lansing State Journal
  • Keyshawn Summerville, Sexton basketball’s all-time leading scorer, signed a NIL deal with EastSide Fish Fry after MHSAA allowed student-athletes to build their brands on Jan. 27. He said the new policy makes his off- and on-court choices feel more like a business game.  Lansing State Journal
