COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter (in Mason) announced four new puppies with unique names chosen by staff and volunteers. The shelter is hosting a Sucker for Shelter Animals Adoption Special through Valentine’s Day, offering dog adoptions for $50 and cat adoptions for $25.  Stacks 92.1
  • Michigan State University is set to break ground in spring on a $3 million permanent memorial honoring 23 students who died during the 2022-23 school year near Berkey Hall, while campus events today provide healing spaces and include a moment of silence at Beaumont Tower from 8:10 to 8:30 p.m.  Lansing State Journal

  • Park Lake Creamery in Bath Township will ship Valentine’s chocolates worldwide this season, with orders reaching Japan and Australia. Owner Konstantin Zsigo processes about 100 orders daily - he plans to move the shop to Lansing's Old Town later this year.  FOX 47

  • Families can enjoy LEGO Palooza returning at Impression 5 Science Center on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 1 (from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for over 20 LEGO-themed activities and full museum access; ticket prices vary by age and membership.  WJIM AM

  • MSU-AI Club holds weekly workshops on campus where students learn AI basics and explore vibe-coding—an approach that speeds up website and app development while risking software glitches. Club leaders say the sessions prepare members for future tech careers.  The State News
  • Michigan State University's Board of Trustees reinstated a September meeting for 2026, scheduling a stakeholder forum on Sept. 10 and a public meeting on Sept. 11 (6-2 vote) to boost campus engagement.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Julie Rogers will introduce House Bill 5524 next week to help small businesses affected by prolonged road construction, letting them apply for up to $15,000 per year if revenue falls due to disruptions + limited access. The bill aims to ease staffing and closure pressures.  Stacks 92.1
  • As temperatures warm, potholes are forming on state and local roads including in Lansing, and MDOT urges drivers to report hazardous spots online (888-296-4546) for timely repairs. Drivers should exercise caution to avoid costly vehicle damage.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing approved the Ingham County Human Services Building parking lot on South Cedar Street as the site for 50 modular housing pods designed to help unhoused residents. Negotiations with Ingham County will begin soon and require a county vote + zoning approvals, with the pods expected by next winter if approved.  FOX 47

SPORTS NEWS

  • Holt junior Ryleigh Kline won the CAAC singles title on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Royal Scot, defeating teammate Ava Seyfried 378-337 in a win that earned her LSJ girls athlete of the week honors. Her coach said the victory marked a big moment in her progress.  Lansing State Journal
  • Senior Bryce Pratl reached 1,000 career points for St. Johns boys basketball in a Feb. 6 win against Eastern, helping his team reach a 14-4 record with a seven-game win streak. He credits teammate support for his growth and now looks forward to playing at Mid-Michigan College.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU coach Tom Izzo announced that true freshman Jordan Scott will nearly double his minutes after guard Divine Ugochukwu's injury. Scott, who impressed in his previous starts, will play against Wisconsin tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Madison + test his skills on the court.  The State News
  • The MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) girls basketball finals are set for March 19-21 at Breslin Center but may move to Western Michigan if a scheduling conflict with the NCAA tournament arises. The final decision is expected by the end of February.  Lansing State Journal
