COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Feb. 13, a lively crowd gathered at the Reo Town Clubhouse for Paczki Palooza's five-minute paczki-eating contest, where community members challenged each other — local figures and residents joined in the festive event.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cold January weather and recent rate hikes have pushed up utility bills in Lansing, with the electric provider confirming a $75 meter calibration fee as standard. Consumers can expect lower bills when temperatures rise in March or April.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MSU Extension workers reached a tentative agreement with the university after eight months of negotiation — the deal provides a 2% raise in Oct. 2025 and a 1% raise upon signing, with adjustments in health care premiums, and will be subject to a vote next week for a three-year contract.  The State News
  • Mayor Schor said Deep Green is amending its contract with the city and Board of Water and Light to build a data center on Kalamazoo Street that uses closed-loop cooling and heat capture to avoid rate hikes. The city will resubmit its rezoning application and extend public review 30 days.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • MSU associate dean Mona Hanna was named to the TIME100 Health list for leading Rx Kids, a program that gives $1,500 mid-pregnancy & $500 during baby's first months to families. The initiative, now in 28 communities and recently launched in Detroit, will expand to the Upper Peninsula in March.  Lansing State Journal

  • No. 10 Michigan State basketball played Wisconsin at Kohl Center on Friday, Feb. 13. Coach Tom Izzo limited Jeremy Fears’ minutes — a move to counter Wisconsin’s John Blackwell — as the Spartans built momentum for upcoming games.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State women's basketball, ranked 13, will seek redemption as they face No. 7 Michigan at Crisler Center at 4 p.m. Sunday—after an overtime loss to Michigan and a defeat to UCLA, the team looks to learn and rebound.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU Athletics announced baseball head coach Jake Boss Jr. signed a contract extension through 2029 just before Friday, Feb. 13 season opener in Louisville. Boss, a Lansing native with nearly 20 years at MSU, has led the Spartans to notable wins & built a strong record in the program.  The State News
