ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire damaged Tipsy Nickel Bar + Grille in Mason last Saturday night when crews arrived just after 7 p.m. to contain flames seen along the rooftop; no injuries were reported, and investigators are still looking into the cause. WKAR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ MSU alumna Sandra Seaton will have her play Sally debut at Wharton Center from Feb. 19 to 21. The world premiere tells the story of Sally Hemings and will feature a full production with costumes + lighting. The State News
- ➤ Families in Vermontville tapped maple trees Saturday to kick off the 85th maple syrup festival (teaching children about the process that requires 35-40 gallons of sap for one gallon of syrup) and preserving a long-standing tradition in town. FOX 47
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Governor Whitmer signed Senate Bill 495 and House Bill 4141 on Feb. 10 banning cellphone use during class instruction in Michigan schools, with exceptions for emergencies and teacher-approved academic work. Districts must adopt rules online before the next school year. WJIM AM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan House passed HB 4445 restoring deer baiting in the Lower Peninsula with a vote of 66 to 38; the bill now moves to the Senate & DNR for review. Until the review is complete, the current bait ban stays in effect. WJIM AM
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Portland and Grand Ledge wrestlers won district titles on Feb. 14 at events around Greater Lansing — local champions boosted their undefeated records across weight classes in Williamston, Howell, Olivet and other communities. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Friday, Feb. 13 girls basketball games had Haslett, Pewamo-Westphalia, Bath, Corunna, Leslie, Capital Homeschool and Alma winning contests against league rivals in Greater Lansing, with key performances from Kaitlyn Johnson and Elly Bengel (standout scores helped decide each matchup).
