COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Five Greater Lansing United Methodist churches are offering free gas today at selected local stations to celebrate Mardi Gras with their Loving Our Neighbors, One Tank at a Time event. The initiative runs from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until gift cards run out.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten teachers statewide have been named Regional Teachers of the Year, with two Lansing area educators from Dansville Elementary & Portland High School among the finalists for Michigan Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made in a press release by state education officials.  Stacks 92.1
  • Rev. Jesse Jackson addressed MSU's winter commencement in 1988 at Munn Arena, congratulating Spartans football and urging graduates to lead boldly amid his presidential campaign; he died peacefully Tuesday morning after battling progressive supranuclear palsy (similar to Parkinson's).  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Lansing recorded a moderate air quality level of 78 after strong winds cleared pollutants from melting snow — nearby cities reported similar readings that could affect sensitive groups.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA has recalled single serve peanut butter and PB&J packs after blue plastic was found during production. Consumers should check their packaging and avoid items from brands like Ventura Foods LLC (follow FDA instructions for safe handling).  WJIM AM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michael Wallace, a professional rodeo clown from Illinois, performed at the Spartan Stampede on the weekend at the MSU Livestock Pavilion, drawing about 10,000 fans. Wallace— with nearly 20 years of experience— helped protect riders during bull riding by adjusting his act in real time.  The State News
  • CMU announced a two-year contract extension for Mason native Kristin Haynie, who boosted the women's basketball team's win total each season. Her contract now runs through the 2028-29 season after her successful stint as a former MSU star and assistant coach.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU coach Robyn Fralick said Rashunda Jones is day-to-day after suffering a lower leg injury during the loss to Michigan on Feb. 15; the team will host Northwestern at 6:30 p.m. today at Breslin Center (honoring six seniors during the game).  Lansing State Journal
