COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local churches and community groups are hosting fish fry dinners every Friday through March and one event extends to April, offering fish meals with sides for adults and children (prices vary by venue). Stacks 92.1
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ After 29 years, the Lake Michigan and East Lansing Film Festivals hold final runs; Lake Michigan Film Festival runs Feb. 26-Mar. 1 at Studio C in Okemos while the East Lansing event will occur in October (details pending). Only the Capital City Film Festival remains for filmmakers. WJIM AM
- ➤ A travelling photo exhibition called Ukraine: War and Resistance opened Tuesday evening at MSU's Snyder Hall and displays images documenting the Ukraine war from 2015 to 2023. Fulbright Scholar Anna Smolko organized the exhibit + history professor Matthew Pauly spoke about the conflict. WKAR
- ➤ Jazz bassist Rodney Whitaker and techno pioneer Carl Craig held the first public event of Craig's MSU residency at the MSU Museum on Feb. 19, discussing Detroit's rich musical heritage and upcoming events like a screening at the Capital City Film Festival. Lansing City Pulse
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State University launched a $5M Jenison Fund to support 64 researchers and graduate students who lost federal funding. Announced in Apr. 2025, the fund provides temporary help for ongoing projects while researchers look for new funding — though it may end after three years. The State News
- ➤ The Lansing School District reached its highest graduation rate ever at 94% in 2025, far exceeding the state's new record of 84%. Nearly every district in Greater Lansing met or surpassed the benchmark & the figures were released on Feb. 24. Lansing State Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Lansing extended its Code Blue winter weather emergency until Thursday, March 5 to help residents stay safe during cold nights. The plan, in effect daily from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., allows local shelters to boost capacity and provides free rides to warming centers by CATA. Stacks 92.1
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved a $143 million investment to build a behavioral health center and an ambulatory surgery center in Lansing, set to open in 2028. Hospital leaders say the projects will add child & adolescent services and expand access to same-day surgery care. FOX 47
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ MSU freshman winger Porter Martone scored his first hat trick in wins over Notre Dame last week and was named Second Star of the Week by the Big Ten; four-goal effort boosted him to 20 goals and 41 points (ranking him ninth in points and fourth in goals among freshmen). The State News
- ➤ Former MSU football coach Mel Tucker has asked a federal judge to consider a state ruling finding his interactions consensual, as he sues the university for wrongful termination and seeks over $80 million on a 10-year contract. He was fired for cause in September 2023 after an internal investigation. Lansing State Journal
