COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Johns volunteer Les Warner delivers up to 116 meals weekly to homebound neighbors through Good News Kitchen+limited vehicle capacity restricts service. Washington lawmakers now plan to launch a pilot program under the Delivering for Rural Seniors Act to boost food delivery in rural areas.  FOX 47

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In February, Lansing saw several restaurant changes as new spots including Shake Shack and Bubbakoo's Burritos opened near Frandor while longtime favorites like Riedy's Tavern and Bella Grande closed. Babe's Corner also relocated, shifting the local dining scene.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan drivers paid just below $3 a gallon on Monday as refineries switched to a more expensive summer blend, and experts warned prices could rise if conflicts in the Middle East disrupt supply chains. Analysts observe the Strait of Hormuz (handling about 20% of oil flows) for signs of increases.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Impression 5 Science Center in Lansing hosted its annual LEGO Palooza fundraiser this past weekend to support hands-on learning for kids (and families). Funds raised bolstered the center’s mission to offer interactive science exhibits and educational programs.  FOX 47
  • MSU’s beloved frisbee-catching dog known as Buckshot passed away Sunday from a rare cancer at 10 years old. Jim and Terri Foley plan a memorial in the coming weeks and encourage fans to donate to the MSU Student Food Bank to honor his legacy.  WKAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 2, researchers reported that the Great Lakes were about 50% frozen; Lake Superior and Lake Erie had high ice coverage while Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario remained mostly open (data provided by NOAA) before warmer air is expected to reduce the ice cover later this week.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced today that the coyote hunting and trapping season runs until Oct. 14 — hunters must hold a base license and nonresidents need a fur harvester license.  Stacks 92.1

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began Monday on Oakland Avenue in Lansing as crews start sewer separation work followed by repaving from Center Street to Walnut Street—drivers face detours through July, and further work on Cavanaugh between Cedar and MLK is planned for later this summer.  FOX 47

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 2, Lansing Catholic beat Perry and advanced to a district semifinal against Laingsburg at 5:30 p.m. on March 4; Ithaca and Waverly also won their quarterfinal games and will face Pewamo-Westphalia (at Ovid-Elsie) and DeWitt (at Grand Ledge) respectively.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State basketball is trending toward a 3-seed in March Madness — Tom Izzo’s team will host Rutgers Thursday at 8 p.m. on FS1 and travel to Michigan Sunday at 4:30 p.m. on CBS as bracketology updates emerge.  Lansing State Journal
  • Seven Greater Lansing boys basketball teams will chase regional titles this week as East Lansing faces Loy Norrix today while Sexton, Pewamo-Westphalia and Fowler vie for championship rounds. Each team needs two wins to advance to the next stage.  Lansing State Journal
