COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Okemos was named the 9th best suburb in America by Niche.com among more than 6,800 suburbs nationwide. The town earned top marks for its schools, safe neighborhoods and local amenities, drawing families and young professionals from near Lansing and Michigan State University.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Women’s History Month inspires co-owner Elise Jajuga at downtown Lansing bookstore A Novel Concept to share a diverse list of reading recommendations featuring nonfiction, historical fiction, and children’s titles. The recommendations include titles like A Muzzle for Witches plus Hidden Figures, which spotlight influential women.  WKAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer held a campaign event on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at Baker Middle School in Troy to continue free school meals for all K-12 students by handing out fruit and vegetables and urging lawmakers to make the program permanent.  WKAR
  • Christopher Hansen, a Potterville Middle School English teacher, was honored with the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award and received a $2,000 check today; his efforts boost dual-enrollment programs and athletic growth in his school community — support that helps students earn college credit and build practical skills.  FOX 47
  • International Baccalaureate Schools of Michigan urged state lawmakers & hundreds of students to support a resolution introduced yesterday at the Capitol to standardize college credit for IB coursework, ensuring fair treatment for students.  Lansing State Journal

  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will revive the 'I Voted' sticker contest for fall as entries are accepted until 5 p.m. on May 1; the contest, which features categories for students and Michigan residents (artwork must be original without AI or copyright), saw 480 submissions in 2024.  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Laingsburg girls basketball team beat Lansing Catholic 46-37 on March 4 in the district semifinal, ending a seven-year title drought. They will face Bath in the district final on March 6 at Bath High School (Brooklyn Holm scored 23 points) as they chase their first district crown since 2018-19.  Lansing State Journal
  • Freshman Taylor Gilding scored 11 points and helped Charlotte beat Eaton Rapids 45-28 in a Division 2 district semifinal at Haslett High School on Wednesday, March 4. The Orioles now advance to the district final where they will face Haslett on Friday, March 6.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Lansing Lugnuts will celebrate their 30th season downtown with promotions featuring giveaways starting the season on Wednesday, April 1 at 6:05 p.m. Giveaways include bobbleheads, a jersey, a Hawaiian shirt, a cowboy hat, a nutcracker, a stadium replica, and a cap on select dates in June, July, and August.  Stacks 92.1
  • East Lansing prevailed 50 to 36 in a girls basketball district semifinal on March 4; Sydney Black scored 20 points & led with 16 in the second half as the team will face DeWitt in the district final on Friday, March 6.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU coach Tom Izzo said his team will face a tough challenge tonight against Rutgers at the Breslin Center — the game is senior night with two games left before the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans hope to secure a triple-bye in their push for a top seed.  Lansing State Journal
  • Travis Shoudy joined his twin + Tiernan at MSU on Oct. 9 as they fulfilled a lifelong dream in their final college season. The twins boosted team spirit in East Lansing with strong on-ice chemistry.  The State News
  • No. 2 MSU hockey faces Minnesota today at 3M Arena at Mariucci in a two-game series as the Spartans seek two points to secure a share or three to clinch the Big Ten regular-season title.  The State News
