  • East Lansing is set for a busy weekend as Big Ten tournaments, high school sports and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations draw large crowds. Local businesses are increasing staffing — police will boost downtown patrols to help keep celebrations safe.  FOX 47

  • Connor Sports in the Upper Peninsula builds hardwood courts for the NCAA Tournament starting next week+ its floors, including 14 for men’s games and regional rounds for women, are also installed in Michigan facilities like the Pistons’ practice center.  Bridge Michigan

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have jumped 55 cents per gallon in one month amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. Reporters found local pumps offering the lowest prices at $2.89 in Lansing — $3.59 in East Lansing and Grand Ledge, and $3.49 in Jackson.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU Film Collective showed Goodbye, Dragon Inn in Wells Hall on Thursday, Mar. 12 and Professor Kuhu Tanvir led a talk with students and guests. They discussed the film’s slow pace — some found it interesting while others thought it was hard to follow.  The State News
  • State education officials at an elementary school in Waterford Township said Governor Whitmer is proposing $625 million in funding to boost literacy by buying new materials + hiring tutors + training teachers, part of her plan to improve fourth-grade reading scores statewide.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State hockey will host Ohio State today at 7:30 p.m. for the Big Ten semifinal after Ohio State beat Wisconsin 7-1 in the quarterfinals. The rematch follows a split series earlier this season in Columbus.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State basketball started its Big Ten tournament in Chicago on Friday at United Center. Coach Tom Izzo said his team remains focused on winning three games in three days to boost its postseason standing before the NCAA tournament.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU lost its 88-84 quarter-final match against UCLA on Friday in Chicago for the Big Ten Tournament as turnovers and mental errors cost them a comeback — coach Tom Izzo said the loss exposes ongoing defensive challenges ahead of the NCAA bracket announcement on Sunday.  The State News
