COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lansing will invest over $5 million to fund eight projects in REO Town—bike lanes, a dog park, and public space updates—using a $4.35 million state grant and a $1 million city match. The projects aim to create a livable district.  Lansing State Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A commercial building hosting Rustic Roots was lost to a fire on Monday, March 16 after heavy black smoke was seen coming off its west end, and cleanup began Tuesday morning with firefighters bringing in heavy machinery to prevent a roof collapse; no one was injured.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lansing is set for an economic boost as Tesla finalized a $4.3 billion deal at the new LG Energy Solution facility in Delta Township. The 2.3 million sqft plant will produce battery cells starting in 2027, with the contract running through 2030 (with a potential seven-year extension).  Lansing City Pulse

HEALTH NEWS

  • Striking nurses from Genesys Hospital & their allies rallied on Capitol steps yesterday to demand lower patient-to-nurse ratios, a return-to-work guarantee & improved pay. Henry Ford Health said it had begun addressing some demands.  WKAR

  • Michigan State fans can shop for affordable March Madness gear on Amazon with t-shirts, hoodies and hats available for under $35. The Spartans will face North Dakota State on March 19 — a timely chance for fans in East Lansing to show their support.  Lansing State Journal
  • Howell High School senior Lilly Williams, a new Michigan State signee, was named Michigan Miss Basketball on Monday at a ceremony in Detroit (the first Spartan signee to win since 2021) after a standout season that included snapping Belleville’s 35-game winning streak.  The State News
  • Former Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald began his era in Michigan State football with the team’s first spring practice on Tuesday, March 17 at Spartan Stadium (East Lansing). He will host a public Spring Showcase on April 18 at noon to share his plans for rebuilding the program.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing Community College's men's basketball team came back from a 25-point deficit but lost 95-90 to No. 1 seed Des Moines Area in the NJCAA Division II championships on Tuesday. DeAndre Berry (39 points) led the charge before free throws sealed the loss.  Lansing State Journal
  • Alumni and a new trustee are working to bring back Michigan State's varsity swim and dive team that was cut in 2020. The effort gains momentum as a new Olympic-sized pool (set to open in May) offers a chance to revive the storied program.  WKAR
  • MSU’s Jeremy Fears Jr. was named an AP second-team All-American on Monday after a standout season, averaging 15.7 points & 9.2 assists per game. He has played a key role for MSU and now joins past legends in earning national honors.  The State News
  • The Pewamo-Westphalia girls basketball team beat Cass City 55-33 on March 17 at Millington High School to reach the state semifinals, marking their first playoff run since 2019. They will face Roscommon in the semifinals at noon Thursday, March 19 at the Breslin Center.  Lansing State Journal
