BUSINESS NEWS

  • MSU students have started a company called BRCĒ that makes strong shoelaces using a new composite material to boost athlete safety during sports. The startup has won national contests and partnered with top players—its founders will soon represent the U.S. in a global competition.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monarch butterflies are leaving Mexico and Central America and will reach Michigan by the end of April so they can breed. Conservation officials urge people to plant milkweed— the key food for monarch caterpillars— to support the fragile migration.  Lansing State Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • IRS data showed that by March 14, 69.6 million federal returns were processed and nearly $163 billion in refunds were issued, with the average refund rising 5.2% to $3,271 from last year. Michigan filings now exceed 2.1 million with more than $1.61 billion in state refunds issued.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Avenue in Lansing will be closed between Leslie and Lathrop streets from Friday until early July for a road rehabilitation project that will add bike lanes, new sidewalks and upgraded water and sewer mains. Detours will direct eastbound traffic to Saginaw Street and westbound traffic to Grand River and Oakland avenues.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and former CFPB director Rohit Chopra warned that federal plans to cut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau could weaken state efforts to guard against predatory lending. State officials and lawmakers plan to push for restoring consumer protection powers in a pending Michigan Supreme Court case — a move aimed at filling gaps left by past decisions.  Michigan Public Radio
  • Local agencies and leaders urged Lansing City Council last night to transfer over –$186 million– in state and local incentives from the joint venture to LG Energy Solution, which is set to become the sole owner of the $2.6 billion EV battery plant in Delta Township. The Michigan Strategic Fund board will discuss incentive changes today—while plant construction nears completion—and LG plans to create 1,700 jobs when the facility reaches full operation.  Lansing State Journal

  • Aldi has recalled nearly 5,000 pouches of Happy Farm’s Colby Jack Deli Sliced Cheese due to possible metal contamination reported by the FDA — consumers are advised to discard or return the products with expiration dates July 13 and 14.  Lansing State Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Aaron Tobias of Century Construction said he will turn the old Northwestern Elementary School in Eaton Rapids into an apartment building with nearly 30 units. The project is expected to begin at the end of the year—local officials say it will improve housing options and offer families access to a park nearby.  FOX 47
