  • Demolition began on old Eastern’s west wing three weeks ago as community members protested the loss of historic artifacts. University of Michigan Health-Sparrow said it will save the cupola for a memorial garden while planning a new psychiatric facility on the site.  Lansing City Pulse

CRIME NEWS

  • Four Michigan corrections officers were charged with beating a prisoner at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility near Ionia on July 7 — the inmate, a 27-year-old, suffered a broken back, hand and facial bones — after he had pleaded guilty to assaulting one officer during the incident.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Board Chair Rachel Beatty announced on March 22 that the Lansing Art Gallery will close at the end of April due to financial challenges—staff layoffs, reduced donor funding, and lower foot traffic after COVID. A closing reception on April 3 will offer visitors a chance to buy pieces from the permanent collection—and local arts groups will share next steps for community support.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Ixion Ensemble Theatre is celebrating its 10th season by restaging its 2018 work 'Broke-ology' about the King family, where a father with illness and his sons face hard choices about care and dreams—set at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood under the guidance of director Rose Jangmi Cooper and artistic director Jeff Croff.  Lansing City Pulse

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by Michigan State University shows that butterfly numbers in Michigan dropped by 22% over the past 20 years — a decline that raises concern for the state’s native ecosystems. Scientists said that loss of meadows, hotter and drier weather, and insecticides are behind the drop and warn that fewer butterflies may mean less food for birds and other wildlife.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing City Councilmember Peter Spadafore—who served as an at-large member since 2018—announced his campaign to run for the open 4th Ward seat after councilmember Brian Jackson said he would not seek reelection. In a campaign video released Tuesday, Spadafore said his plan is to tackle issues on a block-by-block basis focusing on public safety, neighborhood development and essential city services.  WKAR
