CULTURE NEWS

  • The Homegrown Throwdown Finals are happening at Grewal Hall at 5:30 p.m. today as Michigan bands compete in a battle of the bands. Tomorrow, The Mia Chini Trio will perform live with an open jazz session at the Robin Theatre in REO Town from 1 to 3 p.m.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing’s 15-foot interactive sculpture Portrait of a Dreamer (nicknamed Gear Head) was installed in 2017 on Michigan Avenue near downtown and was designed by Michigan-based artist Ivan Iler to let residents turn its gears.  WJIM AM
  • Children's book author Deborah Diesen of Grand Ledge said her best-selling book 'The Pout-Pout Fish' turned into an animated movie last weekend that grossed about $1.5 million and features known celebrity voices.   • On Thursday, DeWitt resident Emily Romblom, who has lived with epilepsy since age 11, shared her journey on Purple Day by hosting a fundraiser for the Epilepsy Foundation to educate neighbors on proper seizure safety.  FOX 47
  • Health officials confirmed that a new COVID-19 variant called Cicada was detected in wastewater samples in Michigan, and experts advise residents to isolate if they feel sick and follow COVID guidelines. Researchers are studying whether current vaccines protect against this variant.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bars in East Lansing and downtown will host MSU fans watching the Sweet 16 game against UConn today at 9:45 p.m. Options include Crunchy's with pregame karaoke and Art's Pub offering extended kitchen hours (up to 10:30 p.m.).  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU won a 2-1 NCAA regional semifinal over UConn yesterday as freshman Ryker Lee scored early and goaltender Trey Augustine made 41 saves. The Spartans will face Wisconsin on Saturday, March 28 in the regional final.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State hockey beat UConn 2-1 on Thursday at the DCU Center in Worcester — with goaltender Trey Augustine making 41 saves. The Spartans now will face the winner of the Dartmouth and Wisconsin matchup in Saturday's regional final for a shot at the Frozen Four.  Lansing State Journal
