Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dave and Buster's in Lansing will open on April 28 at a 22,000-square-foot facility set on over 4 acres along Preyde Blvd near the Fairfield Inn and Suites. The venue—featuring an arcade, games and a full-service restaurant and bar that seats 220—will offer a new entertainment option in the city.  Stacks 92.1

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan State University researchers tested Michigan vineyards for grapevine viruses—using RT-PCR technology—to help growers manage the state’s $6B wine industry. The study, published in Plant Health Progress, now lets growers use MSU’s Plant and Pest Diagnostics lab to detect infections early.  Michigan State University Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four MSU researchers — Nick Haddad, Gemma Reguera, Laura McCabe, and Michael Thoennessen — were named AAAS fellows in March for work protecting butterflies and nature, cleaning up pollution, linking gut health to strong bones and studying atoms, which shows MSU’s strong role in science research.  Michigan State University Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing's new Housing Rehabilitation Program will offer up to 40,000 in grants for essential home repairs for lower-income families—local groups like Habitat for Humanity Capital Region and city officials say the program aims to help more residents secure safe homes.  FOX 47
  • Michigan unemployment benefits will increase next week as a new law raises the weekly payment by 84 dollars, extends the maximum collection weeks to 26, and more than doubles the amount per dependent. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the changes in December and they will take effect on April 2.  Stacks 92.1
  • Auditor General Doug Ringler’s audits released March 27 found that at Ionia Correctional Facility and Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility, corrections officers often falsified cell search records and many vehicles and people were not fully searched, with some cell searches taking less than one minute. The Michigan Department of Corrections blamed training issues and clerical errors for these failures (noting that rushed searches may have involved vacant cells) and agreed with most of the auditor’s recommendations.  Lansing State Journal
