CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rachel Piland and her husband Joshua Piland were convicted on murder and child abuse charges in Lansing after their newborn daughter Abigail died from a treatable blood condition because they refused medical care due to their faith-healing beliefs—family members said they had long pushed for harsher charges. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Associated Students of MSU wrapped up their 61st general assembly session Thursday night by passing bills that will shape student policies for the 2024-2025 academic year—proposals include a no-homework rule during breaks, paid research assistant positions, a living-learning community for Native students, a land acknowledgement plaque, course material cost transparency, and extended dining hall hours. All bills passed with a voice majority—further steps will enhance campus safety alerts and address potential Department of Education impacts to support students. The State News
- ➤ At a meeting on Thursday, ASMSU voted no confidence in Interim Provost Jeitschko over a proposed RCAH—CAL merger that many said lacked proper consultation with students, faculty and staff. - ➤ Ingham County officials from the Treasurer’s Office are going door-to-door to help homeowners behind on property taxes avoid foreclosure set for March 31 by setting up payment plans—if residents do not answer, officials leave a notice with the amount due and a phone number. - ➤ Nestlé announced a recall of frozen meals sold from August 2024 to March 2025 after wood-like material was found in the products—consumers should discard items like Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s to avoid health risks, and those with a valid receipt may return them for a full refund. WJIM AM
- ➤ A recall of 29,541 pounds of beef and turkey sticks from Idaho Smokehouse Partners was issued after metal pieces were found in products sold at Costco stores in Michigan and over 20 other states. Affected items sold from January 16th—January 23rd were removed from shelves to protect consumers from potential health risks. WJIM AM
- ➤ A recall has been issued for Woolite Delicates Laundry Detergent after pseudomonas bacteria was found in select 50-fluid ounce bottles sold on Amazon in January, affecting over 16,000 bottles in Michigan and other states; the bacteria can cause infections so consumers are urged to discard the product or return it for a full refund.
