EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State’s sailing club offers students instruction and competitive opportunities on Lake Lansing; beginner and experienced sailors practice at the MSU Sailing Center in Haslett—building strong community bonds. The student-run club funds its travel through summer fundraisers in Port Huron while keeping the sport affordable.  WKAR
  • MSU’s Esports Club Association connected nearly 20 gaming clubs through its campus LAN event on March 21 (held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) at Commerce Hall, transforming the space into a hub for tournaments and casual play (despite last-minute venue changes).  The State News
  • Two Lansing School District juniors are part of the first fully funded class through Lansing SAVE — a 13-year investment that gives $500 to each of 730 students. The program, managed by the city, district, and MSUFCU, promotes student-led deposit events and will continue supporting future classes.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Consumers Energy’s $226-million rate hike was approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, meaning customers using 500 kWh will pay an extra $6.46 starting May 1 while Attorney General Dana Nessel urged lawmakers to review the cycle of increases.  Stacks 92.1
  • Drivers on U.S. 127 between I-96 and I-496 face lane and ramp closures as MDOT works to complete leftover repairs from the $205 million rebuild; the work began (Monday, Mar. 30) and will continue until June 5.  Lansing State Journal
  • Tax filers in Lansing face increased scam attempts ahead of Tax Day, April 15. Local authorities advise filing early and using multifactor authentication + the IRS and Michigan Treasury have issued guidelines to protect personal information.  Lansing State Journal

  • MSU men’s tennis rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat USC on Friday and overcame a tight match against UCLA on Sunday in East Lansing (improving their record to 8-0 in the Big Ten).  The State News
  • Tomorrow at 6:05 p.m., the Lansing Lugnuts and Michigan State University will hold an altered Crosstown Showdown at Jackson Field in downtown Lansing with a pitching machine, six-out innings and a two-hour limit. Fans catching a home run can exchange it for an autographed item (per the Lugnuts GM).  Lansing State Journal
