- ➤ Ray Ellison, who has salvaged Lansing demolition sites since the 1960s, said the UM Health Sparrow crew failed to preserve Eastern’s historic cupola today—using an excavator to lift it despite its fragile condition—and the piece shattered on contact. - ➤ During Wednesday morning, firefighters responded to a fire at an apartment complex on E. Jolly Road in south Lansing and rescued one unresponsive occupant who was taken to a local hospital while eight apartments suffered smoke damage. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ Twenty-year-old Bradli Stoutmiles was sentenced on Wednesday to 29 to 60 years for fatally shooting Jose Flores in a Lansing drive-by shooting—prosecutors described the killing as senseless with no prior connection between the two. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ A 20-year-old woman was stabbed shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday near W. Holmes Road at Kilberry and Norwich Roads and was rushed to a local hospital, while a 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody—police say she is expected to survive—, with a K9 unit locating the suspect. WLNS

- ➤ The 15th Capital City Film Festival has transformed Lansing’s familiar spaces into quality screening venues since April 2 and will run until April 12. The event features over 140 films (and five concerts) that give locals a new way to experience art. Lansing City Pulse

- ➤ Consumers Energy will begin a 2.79% rate increase tomorrow that will raise the typical residential bill by about $2.78, following a March 21 Public Service Commission approval that secured an extra $153,809,000 in revenue — the company has also filed for another rate increase effective on or after June 2 with an undisclosed amount. - ➤ An overgrown area along the Red Cedar River was turned into a park that connects MSU to East Lansing. The .6-mile park features grassy space and a mulch trail created by Michigan Waterways Stewards — more than 100 volunteers and donated supplies helped clear invasive plants and trash on March 30. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ New laws signed by Gov. Whitmer last year took effect April 2nd — the changes set new rules for car seats for kids, allow paid surrogacy with safeguards, boost unemployment benefits, ban open carry of guns at polling sites, end the gay and trans panic defense, and update work permit rules for minors. - ➤ Michigan increased its maximum weekly unemployment benefit from $362 to $446 for new claims filed starting April 2nd, restoring benefits to 26 weeks and raising each dependent's payment to $12.66 per week. Gov Whitmer signed the law in December 2024, and the state will adjust future payments based on inflation—UIA will review claims filed between Jan. 1st and April 2nd to award any difference if eligible.
