COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rain forced the annual Capitol lawn Easter egg hunt indoors to Grewal Hall (224 S. Washington Square) on April 4; families lined up and enjoyed an egg walk with treats from local businesses.  Lansing State Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today, flooding at The Quarters apartments in East Lansing left cars submerged and residents scrambling for transportation while nearby roads were briefly closed; management did not comment.  FOX 47

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy customers will see electric bills rise by 8.9% starting May 1 as the Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $276.6 million rate hike; the increase follows last year's change and could signal more hikes later. This decision affects more than 2 million households.  WJIM AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flooding on campus has led officials to set up barricades on walkways near the Red Cedar River – a known flood zone – and warn students and staff to stay clear of those areas. Crews will monitor conditions until April 9 and may cancel events if the flooding worsens.  The State News
  • MSU’s Board of Trustees will vote on Friday, April 10, to split a $330M energy project into a heat-and-power unit and chilled water plant and to fund the Spartan Success Center for first-generation students at the Hannah Administration Building while considering a 98-acre land donation in Escanaba for academic research.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The MSU Pollinators Club installed its first bee hotel—located near Baker Woodlot and across from the MSU Surplus store—on Wednesday, Apr. 1 to boost native bee populations and local plant pollination; it plans to add two more hotels this month.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USDA announced it will close Michigan's four Forest Service research facilities as part of a restructuring plan that moves its headquarters to Salt Lake City, affecting sites in East Lansing & Houghton. A state forestry researcher said the closures may impact nearly 3 million acres of forestland.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan has doubled out-of-state placements for youths with severe mental health needs since local facilities closed after the pandemic, forcing children to travel hundreds of miles for care. Families say high costs and long distances challenge visits as state officials work to boost local capacity.  Bridge Michigan

SPORTS NEWS

  • Senior Nikki Smith earned the all-around title at the NCAA Tempe Regional Final with a score of 39.725 as MSU Gymnastics fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships after losses to Florida and Georgia. The meet marked her final collegiate appearance as the Spartans ended their season at 197.000.  The State News
  • Michigan beat Arizona on Saturday to earn a championship spot and will face UConn at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Monday, April 6 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets start at $181 + buy soon +.  Lansing State Journal
  • Last Saturday at Arizona State, MSU gymnastics scored 197.000 in the NCAA Tempe Regional and finished third behind Florida and Georgia, missing a spot in the NCAA Championships.
