Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 6th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The annual MSU Science Festival runs through April and offers free STEAM events for all ages. Festival coordinator Katherine Prokopchuk said each weekend will have a unique theme to help neighbors learn about science.  FOX 47
  • Michigan State University Observatory announced its public outreach events for 2025 but cancelled its first event this Saturday because of bad weather. The observatory will hold 13 free Saturday-night events from April to October where groups can tour the facility and view the moon, Mars or Jupiter.  The State News
  • MSU’s Broad College of Business will no longer require the difficult CSE 102 course for admission starting in the fall application cycle—upperclassmen who took the course expressed mixed feelings about the change. The decision is expected to ease the process for new applicants while raising concerns among others about losing valuable coding skills.  The State News
  • Michigan’s top public schools superintendent, Dr. Michael F. Rice, former Kalamazoo Public Schools head, announced his retirement with his last day set for October 3 while he will write and consult after leaving his post later this year. He said his decision comes after six school years of service to Michigan’s 1.4 million public school children.  Stacks 92.1
  • A video of MSU students burning a Quran at a party was reported to the Office of Civil Rights last fall, though a spokesperson said it is unclear if the matter was investigated. A Muslim student said the same individuals repeated the act earlier this week and university officials are now offering support to affected students — the move reflects the campus commitment to inclusion.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new study by Michigan Auto Law using the latest state police data found that the ten most dangerous intersections in Ingham County are mainly in Lansing, Lansing Township and East Lansing — driver error such as ignoring stop signs and signals is cited as the primary cause of crashes.  WJIM AM
  • A federal appeals court ruled in a 2-1 decision that the warden of Woodland Center Correctional Facility — who is in charge of training officers — can be sued for not training his staff after two guards gave a plastic bag to mentally ill inmate Tyler Venema, who died in 2017 when he used the bag to kill himself. Venema’s family lawyer said the ruling — which may lead to new rules on officer training — could change prison policies as one judge said the evidence did not show the warden was at fault.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA announced a recall on its 12-ounce bags of Our Family Traverse City Cherry Articifically Flavored Decaf Light Roast Ground Coffee—its packaging mislabels the brew and may hide regular coffee, with a best before date of August 3—and consumers should return any purchased product for a full refund.  WJIM AM
