CULTURE NEWS

  • Capital City Film Festival runs from April 8-18 at venues including Central United Methodist Church, Riverwalk Theatre, and Robin Theatre. The festival offers local and international films and events, with a premiere party today at 6 p.m.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy officials told a state commission today that selling 13 hydroelectric dams remains the lowest-cost option for customers and supports vital local reservoirs. The sale, announced last September, awaits state and federal approval before Confluence Hydro begins a 30-year energy contract with the utility.  Stacks 92.1
  • Michigan’s $2.4B SOAR business incentive program has generated 1,846 new jobs, plus 5,028 retained positions as companies work toward nearly 20,000 promised roles using state subsidies. Lawmakers remain cautious as the program’s funding and long-term impact continue to be debated.  Bridge Michigan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees will vote on Friday, April 10 to propose a Spartan Success Center in the Hannah Administration Building. The $5.2 million renovation will offer academic advising, retention coaching and career services to support first-generation students.  Lansing State Journal
  • Officials from the Lansing School District and Christman Company workers broke ground on Lewton Global Studies Spanish Immersion School on Tuesday, April 7 — the new school will open in fall 2028.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU’s School of Packaging announced a $47 million donation from alumnus Charles and Jacqueline Frasier to support an expansion that will nearly double its current building and boost teaching and research spaces.  Stacks 92.1
  • Amy Hindbaugh-Marr of Ithaca Public Schools was honored with a $2,000 check from the Michigan Lottery as this week’s Excellence in Education award winner + her work in the STEAM Lab inspired new after-school robotics programs.  FOX 47
  • MSU students approved a $4 tax increase to fund the student government, renew SafeRide and readership programs, and add three new seats for advocacy groups. Nine representatives were elected and the session began Tuesday, with ASMSU presidential elections set from April 14 to 16.  The State News

  • On Tuesday, Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed rallied college students at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing with online personality Hasan Piker. His efforts focused on affordable health care and reducing corporate influence, and his campaign planned a similar address at the University of Michigan.  Bridge Michigan

  • Bridge Michigan reporters Eli Newman and Jordyn Hermani appeared on WJR’s 'All Talk with Kevin Dietz' on Tuesday to explain why Michigan is increasingly sending children out-of-state for mental health care as local facilities closed amid a growing crisis.   • Keyshawn Summerville earned his third Division 2 all-state honor after averaging 21.7 points this season and breaking his school’s career scoring record, a milestone reached during Sexton’s campaign that saw his team win the CAAC White and district championships.  Lansing State Journal
