  • Lumturje Shuti, a lead Latchkey teacher at Pearl Lean Elementary School, was named this week’s Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award winner and received a $2,000 check for her dedication to her students (nominated by a family member). Her extra efforts outside the classroom have set her apart (using her own resources to supply needed materials and staying late to ensure student safety).  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer has proposed a $7.8 million road usage charge pilot to test charging drivers by the mile as a replacement for the gas tax—funding road repairs—and lawmakers will soon finalize tracking details while local residents express concern that the fee might burden lower-income drivers and discourage electric vehicle use.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by Michigan State University found that brown rice has higher arsenic levels than white rice and may put young children at higher risk (inorganic arsenic is higher). Researchers used U.S. dietary data to show that rice grown here has lower arsenic than imported rice (levels should not hurt health unless very large amounts are eaten daily).  Michigan State University Today
