BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sheetz plans to expand its Michigan base to nearly 20 stores by year-end, adding a location under construction in East Lansing and another in Warren. The company will also launch 100 Indiana stores over the next decade with plans to create long-term jobs.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Spartan Stampede rodeo, held Feb. 13-15 at Michigan State, attracted 6,500 fans and showcased student-led efforts that delivered an inclusive celebration of Western heritage. MSU students organized every detail—from barrel racing highlights to community outreach—for a memorable family event.  WKAR
  • Clue is touring the Wharton Center with a mix of mystery and comedy that transforms a spooky mansion set into an immersive stage. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East Lansing City Council designated the city as a pollinator-friendly community with a 10-year commitment, reducing chemical pesticides and building safe habitats for bees and other insects (an effort that supports local agriculture and landscapes).  FOX 47
  • Mass transit systems in rural Michigan are facing rising fuel costs and a shortage of bus drivers, noted the state's top transit official; local agencies including CATA + SMART must stretch limited funding as inflation pressures operating costs.  Lansing City Pulse

HEALTH NEWS

  • Raw Farm has recalled several cheddar cheeses after the FDA linked unpasteurized milk cheeses to an E. coli outbreak that sickened nine and sent three to the hospital. Consumers should return items bought at Whole Foods Market (or Sprouts Farmers Market) for a refund.  WJIM AM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Lansing Park Board voted Wednesday against recommending the sale of the city-owned riverfront property tied to the Lansing Shuffle to appear on the ballot, leaving the City Council to decide by May 12.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Munn Ice Arena will host a 24-hour hockey game from April 18 to 19 with over 80 players including MSU students to raise funds for pediatric cancer; doors open at 12:15 p.m. on April 18 (a showcase, meet-and-greet and skills competition are included).  The State News
  • East Lansing's KJ Torbert was named the Michigan Sports Writers Division 1 basketball player of the year on Thursday, April 9 after leading his team to the state championship game, and Rockford coach Kyle Clough earned coach of the year as his team lost 54 to 50 for their defeat.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State hockey coach Adam Nightingale is set to lead the U.S. National Junior Team at the World Junior Championships from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5, stepping away from his MSU role next season. He brings a wealth of USA Hockey experience + a strong coaching record.  Lansing State Journal
  • KJ Torbert, a Bowling Green signee who led East Lansing to a 27-2 record and state runner-up finish, was named player of the year by Michigan Sports Writers Division 1 all-state team on Apr. 9. Junior Kingston Thomas earned second-team all-state honors.  Lansing State Journal
