CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU biochemistry senior Abhinav Anand performed an original Bharatanatyam at Sri Sharadamba Temple in Farmington Hills on March 8. He interpreted ancient Hindu myths with modern context as he embraced his identity on stage with strong support from family (and friends).  The State News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy is preparing a new rate hike request to be filed in June, one week after a ($276.6 million) increase set to take effect May 1. The Michigan Attorney General said her office will challenge the move, arguing it adds to rising bills for customers.  WJIM AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On a recent April evening, researchers from Michigan State University led a Frog Walk at Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center where over 50 locals learned about frog calls and wetland health. They will host another walk on April 23 at the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy in Bath Township.  WKAR

FINANCE NEWS

  • Friday’s Mega Millions drawing on Apr. 10 produced no winner as the jackpot hit $110 million. The next drawing is set for Tuesday, Apr. 14 with a minimum jackpot of $120 million and ticket sales closing at 10:45 p.m. (in-store and online in Michigan).  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's Department of Natural Resources has expanded underwater spearfishing access for this season by eliminating monthly reporting and requiring both a free spearfishing license and standard fishing license. New rules also strengthen safety measures + mandate diver flags to alert boaters on the Great Lakes.  WJIM AM
  • Michigan's spring turkey season begins April 18 and runs through May 31 with a new rule that requires hunters to report their harvest within 72 hours before transferring the bird. The DNR says the rule will help collect data to keep turkey populations healthy.  WJIM AM

  • MSU women's soccer beat GVSU 5 to 1 to win the Michigan Spring Cup at Spartan Greens Turf Complex on Saturday — capping a perfect spring season with standout plays by Aubrey Ciampa and Kennedy Bell.  The State News
