Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ASMSU held its General Assembly elections last week with only a small increase in voter turnout as many students did not know about the vote and some said the process was rushed because of ice cream incentives. Proposal 2 passed by a narrow margin — critics said the vote did not allow enough time for careful consideration, and ASMSU officials promised to improve the voting process in the next session.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan will receive support from Indiana Department of Transport after an ice storm hit northern lower Michigan two weeks ago—four nine-person debris removal teams are set to arrive today to clear downed trees and debris from key roads. Michigan Department of Transportation has already deployed maintenance crews and equipment from several regions—these efforts are aimed at speeding recovery operations.  WLNS
  • On April 12, Montie House in East Lansing held a tree planting event where Till Utopia Garden donated four edible trees—redbud, American plum, elderberry, and chokeberry—and arborist Kelley Smith taught members proper planting techniques to improve food access and tree canopy equity in the community.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Demonstrators are gathering outside Congressman Tom Barrett's office in Lansing and Congressman Tim Walberg's office in Jackson to protest the SAVE Act, a bill passed earlier this week that would require voters to show a passport or birth certificate (and add extra steps for name changes). The bill now heads to the Michigan Senate where its future is uncertain.  WLNS

  • Johnsonville recalled 22,672 pounds of Bacon Cheddar Bratwurst made in February after plastic pieces were found in 19-ounce trays with package code B9FOD and Est. 1647—consumers are urged to return the product for a refund or discard it to avoid health risks.  WJIM AM
