ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan DNR asks residents to watch for invasive lesser celandine (fig buttercup) blooming now in mid-Michigan. Volunteers are training to report sightings in affected counties such as Ingham and Ionia.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Bill G. Schuette introduced a bill to tighten dam safety rules after reports showed Michigan dams are aging and underfunded amid spring floods, as funding was cut from $6 million to $1.5 million last October. A House committee hearing is expected later this month.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Advocates urged Michigan lawmakers during Black Maternal Health Week to advance the Momnibus bills that will update data tracking, expand insurance for midwife services, and bar pregnancy discrimination; the bills passed in the Senate but are still pending a floor vote in the House.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tabitha Betson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Melbourne who played two seasons at Colorado, has committed to Michigan State women's basketball for the 2026-27 season. She started 16 games last season and helped her former team to an NCAA tournament appearance.  Lansing State Journal
  • Three Michigan State gymnasts – senior Nikki Smith, senior Sage Kellerman, and junior Gabi Ortiz – competed at the NCAA Championships last Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas in a bid for national titles; while none earned a title, their efforts brought them All-American recognition.  The State News
  • Michigan State football's spring showcase was held Saturday, April 18 near Spartan Stadium (close to the overflowing Red Cedar River) where coach Pat Fitzgerald called the event a single practice step. The game featured starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic and new offensive line starters with team bonding activities.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State football added transfer wide receiver Jameel Gardner Jr. (from Cass Tech) on Saturday after spring practices ended, giving him one year of eligibility (from Jackson State). Coach Pat Fitzgerald said Gardner’s play will boost the Spartans’ roster this season.  Lansing State Journal
