EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU closed its longtime IM West facility on April 24 after nearly 70 years of hosting campus sports—students now use the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center at Birch and Shaw. The Board of Trustees approved demolition to begin in Spring 2027.  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local neighbors join a free SKYWARN training this week to serve as the eyes and ears for the National Weather Service, helping report severe weather in the area (enhancing storm warnings during tornadoes and heavy rainfall).  FOX 47

FINANCE NEWS

  • No one won Friday, April 24, Mega Millions drawing; in Michigan, ticket sales continue until 10:45 p.m., and the jackpot will climb from $150 million to at least $163 million in Tuesday's 11 p.m. drawing (winners can enter tickets online and at retailers).  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDOT is shifting all traffic to the southbound side of US 127 as crews work to repave northbound lanes between I-69 and near Lake Lansing Road beginning Tuesday, Apr. 28. Motorists should follow posted detours and expect delays.  Lansing State Journal
  • A new Lansing proposal (Senate Bill 784) would provide every public school student free breakfast and lunch and enforce stricter nutrition standards that limit sugary snacks; if passed, the rule will change food offerings in school cafeterias.  WJIM AM

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lions drafted linebacker Jimmy Rolder from Michigan after trading up for Derrick Moore to add depth to their defense. Rolder, known for his strong tackling during his senior season, may provide immediate help on defense + special teams.  WJIM AM
  • Michigan State football punter Ryan Eckley was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in Round 6 on April 25 after opting out of his final college year, averaging 48.5 yards per punt (a Big Ten high); he becomes the sixth MSU punter ever picked for the NFL Draft.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State football offensive lineman Matt Gulbin—who earned team captain honors—was selected in the sixth round by the Washington Commanders on Apr. 25 in East Lansing. His standout season helped secure his draft pick as the Spartans continue their NFL streak.  Lansing State Journal
