CRIME NEWS

  • A new study by Omega Law Group found Michigan had the second highest rate of wrongful convictions nationwide, with an average of 5.98 per 100,000 residents from 2020 to 2024—just behind Illinois.  WJIM AM
  • On April 24, a suspected street racing crash on South Martin Luther King Boulevard caused a chain reaction that injured 13 people—including one passenger in critical condition—and police said the investigation will take time as they review speed and charge details.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school graduations in Lansing will be held from May 10 to June 8 at school grounds and local venues such as the MSU Breslin Center and the Wharton Center—organizers have set strict security measures. At these venues, metal detectors and bag searches will be used—visitors should not bring prohibited items.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State University will celebrate over 10,000 graduates from many programs starting May 1 at the Breslin Student Events Center and Wharton Center for Performing Arts. The convocation on May 2 at 12:30 p.m. will feature remarks by Mat Ishbia — and additional ceremonies will have speakers for master's, doctoral and professional programs with livestream options for family and friends.  Michigan State University Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, East Lansing City Council held its second Fiscal Year 2026 budget work session at 6 p.m. in the Banquet Room at the Hannah Community Center on Abbot Road, where City Manager Robert Belleman presented a General Fund Deficit Reduction Plan that proposed raising revenues through lease agreements and special assessments—reducing expenditures by cutting contributions, fees, and other costs. Council will hold a public hearing on May 13 on the preliminary budget and related proposals before planning to adopt the budget and tax rate on May 27.  City of East Lansing
  • Michigan's DNR released its 2025-26 hunting season calendar that lists dates for turkey, elk, bear, deer, waterfowl and small game hunts. The schedule shows turkey season started on April 19 and hunters can apply for elk and bear licenses starting May 1 — it also details dates for other hunts.  Lansing State Journal
