BUSINESS NEWS

  • MACOTTA Club, the planned food incubator to host six restaurants in downtown Lansing, is canceled because it did not secure enough private funding — costs doubled from $4 million to over $8 million in three years.  Lansing State Journal
  • Smokey Bones abruptly closed its Eastwood Towne Center restaurant at 2401 Lake Lansing Road. The location, which opened in 2004 as the last Smokey Bones in the area, shut down due to FAT Brands’ downsizing efforts.  Stacks 92.1

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local restaurants host Lansing Restaurant Week from May 9 to May 17, offering $7 meals + $5 drinks at over 100 spots around town. Organized by Lansing 5:01, Lansing Foodies, and Choose Lansing, the event invites residents to try new dining experiences.  WJIM AM
  • Wharton Center in East Lansing announced its 2026-27 Performing Arts Season to mark its 45th anniversary with shows ranging from variety and classical to dance, jazz, club 750 and family series. Subscription packages go on sale today at 9:00 a.m.  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mike Stoneback, an English and AP Government teacher at Pinconning High School, receives a $2,000 check from the Michigan Lottery today for his commitment to education — he was nominated by a colleague and recognized for his work in school events and community support.  FOX 47
  • MSU is holding graduation ceremonies from today through May 9 at various campus venues; convocation takes place Friday, May 1 at the Breslin Center with Gov. Whitmer speaking, and free parking + shuttles will serve guests while livestreams are available via WKAR.  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's DNR opens elk hunt applications on May 1, offering only 200 tags+ tens of thousands of hunters are expected to apply; drawing results come June 22 and the hunt runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 4 and Dec. 1 to Dec. 15.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on US-127 face delays today as MDOT crews begin shifting northbound traffic between Lake Lansing Road and I-69; detour signs are posted and the project will continue until mid-November.  Stacks 92.1

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC reported that 34 people became sick with salmonella linked to backyard poultry, including 13 hospitalizations, and most cases were in Michigan — officials advise washing hands thoroughly and using dedicated footwear after handling birds.  Lansing State Journal
  • WKAR will host its second season of I Feel Talks (Youth and Mental Health Wellness: A Community Conversation) on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. on the Michigan State University campus to share stories and offer resources for emotional wellness.  Lansing State Journal
