COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter in Mason is offering reduced adoption fees at its Empty the Shelters event, where spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped pets are available. The shelter on Buhl Street is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (adoptions stop at 4:30 p.m.)  Stacks 92.1
  • Grassroots Groundwork and a new homeless shelter remain firm in using the name The Nest after a dispute over the shared moniker; the mental health group continues free peer support while the shelter, which has registered the name, is set to open mid-May downtown.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Starfarm will perform at Grewal Hall with an 80s cover set that brings fun and familiar tunes. Meanwhile, local DJs and artists keep the electronic music scene lively at Mac's Bar on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a free community music festival is planned for Aug. 30.  Lansing State Journal
  • Wharton Center announced its 2026-27 Performing Arts Season featuring returning icons like Sutton Foster and Yo-Yo Ma and emerging acts at multiple downtown venues — from Broadway cabaret to dance. ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Thursday, April 30, gas prices in Lansing jumped nearly $1 per gallon as some stations charged $4.99 for regular unleaded while a local Costco offered it for $4.19, a rise that could affect drivers in the area.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU is hosting graduation ceremonies starting today at Breslin Center and Wharton Center. Graduates and families will celebrate Master’s, Doctoral, Nursing and other degrees over the weekend with events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Stacks 92.1
  • MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz received over two dozen emails from the Jewish community raising concerns that leftist commentator Hasan Piker's campus visit could promote extremist views (including antisemitic rhetoric), and he clarified that the university did not invite Piker while upholding free speech values.  The State News

  • On Wednesday, April 29, a Powerball drawing produced a $143 million jackpot win from tickets sold in Indiana and Kansas, and a Michigan ticket won $1 million or $2 million. Michigan sales ended at 9:45 p.m., and the next drawing is set for Saturday, May 2 at 10:59 p.m.  Lansing State Journal

  • Data centers are moving into Mid-Michigan, and residents are raising concerns about local property values as new projects begin; real estate expert Rochelle Ridgell said demand will determine if property values rise, fall, or remain stable.  FOX 47
