COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Photographer Nick King continues his Walk in the Park series by featuring the peaceful Graham Community Trail—a three-acre park with groomed trails, benches (built by Eagle Scouts) and a pond behind Graham Church on 7320 W. Beard Road in Perry. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and is just a 20-minute drive from Lansing.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new bubble tea shop (Bubble Joy) is preparing for an opening on Michigan Avenue near Hayford in Lansing’s Eastside. Work is underway on the building where customers will soon enjoy handcrafted milk teas, fruit teas, and additional menu items.  WJIM AM
  • United Airlines will launch nonstop flights from Capital Region International (CRI) to Chicago O'Hare starting Thursday, May 7. The new route will offer four daily flights and give travelers easy access to United's global network.  Stacks 92.1

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mason High School held its prom on Friday, May 1 at The Venue by Eleven 11 Events in Delta Township, with photos showing students celebrating a memorable evening.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders and parents in Ingham report a shortage of special education teachers that is affecting schools. The state has introduced new flexibilities (Talent Together program) to boost recruitment as neighbors will vote on a special bond proposal next week.  FOX 47
  • Students at Wacousta Elementary are exploring aviation careers as Eaton RESA brings its mobile skylab to the school today; the program offers flight simulation, drone controls and ground marshaling practice (real-world aviation tasks) to spark interest in in-demand careers.  FOX 47
  • Michigan State University held its convocation at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Friday, May 1, with speeches by MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mid-Michigan invasive species coordinator Stephanie Day said state lawmakers cut funding for the statewide invasive species program, leaving local teams with fewer resources to control harmful plants in parks (like Fitzgerald Park) and waterways. The budget slash may lead to long-term risks for native ecosystems if current efforts fall short.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Charlotte's Cami Tuller, a junior named LSJ girls athlete of the week, led her team this spring with a 10-1 record that surpassed her wins from her freshman and sophomore seasons. The tennis player credited early setbacks for her growth and plans to pursue state meet qualification.  Lansing State Journal
  • At Comerica Park, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Justin Verlander held a bullpen session Wednesday while recovering from a hip injury and will practice again this weekend — Zach McKinstry and Troy Melton have begun rehab assignments.  WJIM AM
  • Michigan State Fencing Club, a century-old program, meets Monday–Thursday at IM West. After IM West closes at month’s end, the club will move to a smaller space at the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center (a change that presents storage challenges) as it prepares for upcoming competitions.  WKAR
