- ➤ Old Town celebrates Small Business Week from May 4th through May 11 as local shop owners emphasize the need for community support amid slowed foot traffic and inflation—businesses like Copper Moon and Twiggies encourage locals to shop small. FOX 47
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State University’s Broad Museum is showcasing Nabil Kanso: Echoes of War—an exhibition of the late artist’s paintings that depict the human impact of war—on view through June 29. Curated by Rachel Winter in collaboration with the Kanso Estate and local MSU professors, the exhibition is the first time his work has been shown in the United States. The State News

- ➤ Michigan State University dissolved the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative (NSSC) after a review showed its work was taken over by other student support offices, with the change taking effect April 17. MSU laid off some NSSC staff and will centralize student services in a new Student Services center at the Hannah Administration Building this fall. The State News
- ➤ Michigan State University’s College of Engineering unveiled a new technology engineering program that blends mechanical, electrical and computer engineering with computer science to meet industry demand. The program started in fall 2024 and gives students hands-on lab courses—its first class will graduate in fall 2026. The State News
- ➤ Hundreds of College of Natural Science students celebrated MSU's spring commencement at the Breslin Center on Saturday afternoon—Assistant Dean Eric Hegg and graduate speaker Zane Abdel praised the hard work that earned their achievements. Some graduates announced plans for internships and further studies that will shape their futures. The State News

- ➤ Starting May 7, Michigan residents will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to fly domestically and access federal facilities; Enhanced IDs (which include the approved star or U.S. flag) also allow land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean. Residents who lack a compliant ID should update their documents at a local secretary of state office or use an acceptable alternative such as a passport. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Michigan's Secretary of State now requires appointments for Real ID services—visitors, especially seniors, were surprised by the change from the old ticket system. The new policy, in effect since before COVID, may delay processing for those planning to fly soon—prompting many to check appointment slots early. WJIM AM

- ➤ Ray & Mascari Inc. recalled its 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes sold at Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states after Hanshaw & Capling Farms in Florida alerted the company to potential salmonella contamination.
