COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 4, a wildfire spurred evacuations for Mio-area residents in Oscoda County. By 11 p.m., containment reached 80% and officials remained on scene to monitor the fire for full containment.  Lansing State Journal
  • Miranda Hinton founded the Marcus DA Comedian Foundation to honor her late son Marcus Jackson, who was shot in 2020. FOX 47 named the foundation its 3 Degree recipient for May and Hinton will use the funds to host a summer basketball camp for youth aged 8 to 17.  FOX 47

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Lansing Chipotle on West Saginaw Highway lost Teamsters backing after more than three years without a contract, and the restaurant said it followed the law + union leaders claim the setback shows weaknesses in federal labor rules.  WKAR
  • Xfinity has reached an agreement with Scripps Broadcasting that restores WSYM Fox 47 on its cable service across mid-Michigan and applies a one-time $8.73 credit to customers for the blackout period.  Stacks 92.1
  • In April, several local businesses opened, including Finger Lickin Chicken & Fish at Lansing Shuffle on April 11, Gardner White’s new furniture store on West Saginaw Hwy and Homestead Pantry Meats & More in St. Johns, while Smokey Bones in Lansing Township closed on April 28.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Beerfest at the Ballpark will be held at Jackson Field on Saturday, May 9, offering over 300 drink options, live music on three stages, shopping, and food from Lugnuts concession stands, with various ticket packages available including sampling tickets starting at 2 dollars.  Lansing City Pulse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lansing Promise, a place-based scholarship program, awarded $1.2 million to 340 students last school year and now offers up to $20,000 for qualifying high school seniors to pursue a bachelor’s degree or approved trade training. Eligible students receive an email with application steps (including FAFSA) each senior year.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Early returns showed that the Ingham ISD bond proposal to build a new Beekman Center and renovate Heartwood School passed with 56% support on Tuesday, May 5. Voters approved a $99.96 million bond, meaning property owners (with a taxable value of $100,000) would pay about $55 in taxes.  Lansing State Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Some Michiganders may be eligible for a COVID-era tax refund from penalties charged during the pandemic pending a court decision; affected taxpayers should check their IRS transcripts and file a claim by July 10 to preserve their refund rights.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Capital Region International Airport firefighters completed a live fire training exercise on May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. using a propane-fueled simulator (generating heavy smoke) to practice aircraft rescue techniques while normal operations continued.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan Department of State’s “I Voted” sticker contest drew 2,095 entries, up from 480, with submissions accepted through May 1st. The Michigan Collegiate Task Force will narrow entries to 25 semifinalists per category with a vote starting June 1st, and winners will be revealed this summer for November’s election.  Stacks 92.1

  • MSU men’s tennis coach Harry Jadun stepped down after four seasons to pursue new career opportunities, and assistant Mike Flowers took over amid a season that saw a historic Big Ten tournament win; top recruit Forbes entered the transfer portal after helping secure the championship.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State launched Spartans Mobile on Monday to let phone customers contribute up to 7% of their bills to support the FOR SPARTA initiative. The partnership with PlayFly and Collegiate Mobile adds a new revenue stream for athletics with perks like seat upgrades + pregame tailgates.  Lansing State Journal
