- ➤ AAA reports Michigan drivers saw gas prices increase by 20 cents with averages reaching $4.78 on May 6 while Lansing-East Lansing recorded $4.75 + experts expect a brief drop in prices as global oil supply remains strained by the Iran conflict. Lansing State Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shawn Flock, a math interventionist at Daisy Brook Elementary in Lansing, was honored today with the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award and a $2,000 check after being nominated by the Fremont Elementary PTO (for his role in keeping kids safe and supporting struggling learners). - ➤ Jessica Benavides was named the next superintendent of the Lansing School District after a 6-0 board vote on May 7; the board will soon begin contract negotiations with her after nearly 30 years of service. She has worked in the district for most of her career and calls it home. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ Jackson has revived No Mow May, letting residents leave rear yards unmowed this month to support pollinators; East Lansing has ended its seasonal pause in favor of a year-round, pollinator friendly landscaping approach. WKAR
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, May 6, no one in Michigan won the Powerball drawing with numbers 18, 27, 51, 65, 68 and Power Ball 5, leaving the jackpot unclaimed. The next drawing is scheduled for 10:59 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and the prize will grow to at least $47 million. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ The Pistons’ playoff run is boosting local businesses today as sports bars and retailers in Lansing see higher sales and foot traffic — business owner Al Salas said the surge in team spirit helps ease concerns over rising costs. FOX 47
- ➤ Michigan State University plans to renovate Spartan Stadium at a cost of $500 million. Construction will begin in November 2027 and finish summer 2029 — the project includes new east towers with luxury suites and upgraded concourses, concessions, bathrooms and accessibility. Stacks 92.1
- ➤ Michigan State football will face Notre Dame in a primetime game on Sept. 19 in South Bend — marking their first meeting since 2017 and celebrating 60 years since a storied tie in East Lansing. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Michigan State football announced home-and-home series with Oklahoma State and Cincinnati and will host Duquesne for the first time on Sept. 4, 2027 at Spartan Stadium. The matchups will mark first contests with the Cowboys in 2028 and the Bearcats in 2030. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Guard Theryn Hallock announced her return for the upcoming 2026-27 season with Michigan State women’s basketball after playing only eight games last season because of a lower leg injury — a boost for the team after losing three top scorers. Lansing State Journal
