ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire at Bath Township’s Village at Chandler Crossing on Saturday, May 9, damaged 12 apartments and displaced 46 off-campus students when discarded smoking materials ignited the blaze; firefighters from six departments battled the fire, and one responded with a rolled ankle but kept working.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dough Square Dumpling House in East Lansing closed permanently because of unforeseen circumstances — leaving local diners wondering if it will reopen. The small, popular restaurant had earned a loyal following with its freshly made dumplings.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The R.E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing was awarded a Home Depot Foundation grant to upgrade its grounds and gift shop. Team Depot volunteers will work this Thursday (May 14) to prepare for the summer Car Capital Auto Show on July 18.  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monday night, the St. Johns school board voted to put a $40M bond proposal on the November ballot to fund projects (parking lots, boilers, classroom renovations) in the district. Superintendent Anthony Berthuime said the measure will keep the tax rate at 7 mills through 2033 after earlier failed bids.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the Midwestern Regional Climate Center report many Michigan cities experienced winter grades from extreme to average. Lansing recorded an average winter with 778 points as measured by the accumulated winter season severity index that accounts for temperature and snowfall.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Social Security beneficiaries with May birthdays will get checks starting tomorrow (birthdates 1–10 on May 13, 11–20 on May 20, 21–31 on May 27), while COLA for 2027 will be forecast in October and local offices will observe Memorial Day closure (May 25).  Lansing State Journal

  • LSJ is choosing its high school athlete of the week from candidates at Bath, Williamston, and Lansing Catholic. McCallister (golf), Palmer (baseball) and VanAlstine (track) showed strong performances during May 4–9, and voting closes at noon Wednesday, May 13.  Lansing State Journal
  • Voting for LSJ girls high school athlete of the week for May 4-9 is open until noon Wednesday, May 13. The nominees include Madi Hendy from St. Johns, Laci Neal from Dansville and Shea O’Neil from Williamston, each noted for standout game performances.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU men’s club rugby trains hard and recovers quickly after intense games on campus. The Division 1A team features seasoned international players plus newcomers who bring diverse experience, and they emphasize teamwork and respect for officials.  WKAR
  • Portland St. Patrick baseball swept Fowler on May 11, 2026 as Brady Leonard struck out 10 in the opener and Sean Fedewa gave key relief in the finale of the top-10 CMAC matchup.
