- ➤ Governor Whitmer will proclaim May 17 as 517 Day to honor Lansing and the region as the celebration grows in impact. The event will feature music, flash tattoo events, a hip hop beat contest and rappelling at Boji Tower, and founder Melik Brown will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. at Washington Avenue and Capitol Avenue downtown. - ➤ The public will see the new John Smoltz Strikeout Baseball Stadium in Ferris Park—located at 500 W. Shiawassee Street—when it opens on Friday, June 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Games, giveaways and refreshments will be offered to players and fans. Stacks 92.1

- ➤ Lansing’s Riverwalk Theatre hosts 'Lanstronauts, We Have A Problem', a sketch comedy show that began on May 15 and will run until May 18 at 8 p.m. Director Rico Bruce Wade quickly held auditions and worked with local actors to create funny sketches—such as jokes about the Detroit Lions—bringing new laughter to the community. - ➤ East Lansing Art Festival marks its 62nd year and will be held May 17-18 in downtown East Lansing with free admission. - ➤ The MSU Research Foundation designated $75 million on May 15 to support Michigan State University's (Uncommon Will, Far Better World) campaign, which will advance research, innovation and student success over the next eight years. This funding adds to more than $45 million in earlier contributions and brings the campaign’s total support to over $120 million. Michigan State University Today
- ➤ Black MSU students reported facing racial slurs, physical assaults, and exclusion in class while saying that the university has not provided enough support, and they met with officials in a town hall meeting to push for better safety and educational resources—calls they say reflect a long history of neglect. - ➤ The state Senate passed its 2026 budget on May 14 and rejected the governor’s proposed vape tax and landfill fee hikes while raising money by increasing hunting & fishing license fees and lowering the cost of a recreation passport. The $84.6 billion plan adds more than $1 billion to spending yet draws slightly less from the main state fund, and discussions will continue as the House prepares its own version. - ➤ Voting is open through 9 a.m. May 19 for the annual Diamond Classic where fans can vote on teams including DeWitt, the Panthers, Grand Ledge, Holt, Lansing Catholic, Charlotte and Okemos.
