BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gray Media Lansing was honored with 25 Broadcast Excellence Awards last Saturday at MotorCity Casino for its local news, weather, sports and digital coverage. WILX-TV earned Station of the Year as part of a team effort that supports the community.  FOX 47
  • Gray Media Lansing said the FCC approved the acquisition of WSYM-TV FOX 47 & the two stations combined operations on Friday, May 15, strengthening news service in the Lansing-Jackson market. It announced plans to expand its broadcast studios on American Road on Monday, June 15.  FOX 47
  • United Airlines delayed its nonstop flight from Lansing Capital Region International Airport to Chicago O'Hare until Oct. 25 due to FAA limits amid heavy summer traffic, and passengers must now book connecting flights or request refunds.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Capital Area District Library opened its new Local History Center in a 19,000 sqft building on University Park Drive in Alaiedon Township last Monday, where donated glass plate negatives, vintage yearbooks and historical maps are preserved. EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU trustees approved increasing president Kevin Guskiewicz's salary nearly double from $1,029,210 to $2 million annually — a step taken to retain him as six of eight trustees supported the change in a Sunday night special meeting.  Lansing State Journal

  • No ticket won Saturday's Powerball drawing, pushing the jackpot past $100 million. The next drawing is today at 10:59 p.m. – Michigan ticket sales close at 9:45 p.m.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State police, county deputies, and local officers begin extra patrols on major roadways today as part of Michigan’s two-week 'Click It or Ticket' initiative — enforcing seat belt use and targeting drunken, distracted driving and speeding to reduce crash fatalities by 30 percent by 2030.  Stacks 92.1
  • The Michigan State University Board of Trustees held a livestream meeting on Sunday, May 17 to review changes to its Code of Ethics and personnel matters. The meeting was on Zoom and limited to the first 500 viewers (per university guidelines).  Lansing State Journal
