COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ingham County Fairgrounds will build a new covered grandstand in 2027, replacing the structure torn down in 2016. The facility (seating nearly 1,400) received major donations including $250K from the Dart Foundation and three $100K gifts, with federal funding received in 2023 and bids starting in July.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Lansing's historic former Clara's Lansing Station building on Michigan Ave. will house two new restaurants, The Morning Post and D’Nulffos Seafood and Chophouse, expanding from their East Lansing spot and set to open this summer.  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz is offered a new contract that would nearly double his salary to $2 million, increase his deferred compensation to $250k and extend his term to 2031 if he signs, making him the second-highest paid Big Ten leader. Trustees approved the proposal (6-1 vote) on May 17.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Michigan Education Association awarded the 2026 MEA Scholarship to 24 new public school students, each receiving $2,000, and to 22 college students getting $1,000; Duncan Larzelere from East Lansing High School is the only mid-Michigan recipient as the winners plan to attend public universities in the fall.  Stacks 92.1

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Memorial Day weekend runs May 23 to May 25 with parades and memorial services honoring fallen military personnel. Schools, banks and government offices will close Monday, May 25 — events taking place in Michigan.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing Fire Marshal Jared Nisch is named the 2026 Fire Marshal of the Year by the National Fire Protection Association for his work in code compliance and community risk reduction. He will be honored on June 21 (at the NFPA Conference and Expo) as local leaders praise his service.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • ER visits for tick bites have surged to near-decade highs as summer nears. Local health experts advise wearing long pants + using insect repellents when outdoors to prevent Lyme disease from black-legged ticks, the main species found here.  Lansing State Journal

  • Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said the 125-94 Game 7 loss to the Cavaliers did not disappoint because the team achieved a 60-win season and its first playoff series win in nearly 20 years.
